That is around 13 tons of the stuff. Someone was well prepared for this. Indeed, if you consider how long it takes to put 50 litres into your car and then multiply that time by 260, you start to have an understanding that this was not siphoned through a garden hose. This must have been through a 4 inch pipe or similar.

I'd imagine this was done like you say with a big pipe and a quiet corner to hide the lorry around.

I guess the syphoned bit was made up as you would have trouble syphoning from an underground tank.

Must have had a tanker and they have a pump on them.

All joking aside the sad thing about this is that the owner of the place could well be put out of business by a theft like this.

Steeton is not exactly throbbing with traffic, I expect the place is a small independent retailer. Unlikely to be covered on their insurance.

Indeed it is astonishing what people will steal nowadays. Oil from central heating tanks, paving slabs, railway copper cable, church roofs. In York a historic iron plaque was ripped from a wall a while back, sadly its new replacement hasn't got that time-worn look and the original is hidden away to be gloated over.

As most people have mobile phones now, you would think crime prevention would be easy, but I guess all the thieves need do is look 'official' - high-viz jackets, even! - and no-one questions them.

In this case it's quite possible that it looked like a delivery rather than a robbery. Who would go up to the culprits and question them especially in the small hours.

I'd guess this stuff may be sold to unscrupulous hauliers and the like.

Actually I am surprised that more central heating fuel does not go.

My tank is underground in the garage but most are stuck up on legs in the garden.

They can easily have £800 worth of oil in them that will just silently run into whatever you poke the end of the pipe into. Put the pipe back and the owner probably would not even know until they run out a few days later.
