Indeed it is astonishing what people will steal nowadays. Oil from central heating tanks, paving slabs, railway copper cable, church roofs...........but I guess all the thieves need do is look 'official' - high-viz jackets, even! - and no-one questions them.

Too true, a theft of a large number of HGV batteries was carried out at my workplace recently - in broad daylight and the CCTV "still" showed the new maintenance manager standing watching the thieves load them up!!!

Apparently the scrap lead in 24V batteries can fetch up to £18 for each one??

In this case it's quite possible that it looked like a delivery rather than a robbery. Who would go up to the culprits and question them especially in the small hours.

I think that's the important point. Anyone who witnessed this probably thought it was a fuel delivery being pumped in and paid no attention.

Slightly OT

A friend of ours had his garage robbed of money and fags.

The video showed his employee loading his car with the goods, and then being tied up by his girlfriend.

They hadn't realised that the video was there!

What really hacked off my friend was when he had a demand for wages!

His legal advice was that he actually had to pay the offender from the time he started work until the theft started.

Sounds to me like the Tanker driver did not dump a full load into the tank, has happened before, when the staff have not been watching what is going on and have signed for the full load or might have been rewarded with a little present.

I worked in a petrol station 24 years ago whilst at college and we had to dip the tanker before and after he commenced his delivery - this meant climbing onto the top of the tanker with the driver and witnessing the levels. He had to sign our log at the garage and we had to sign his for his employer.

Things are maybe different nowadays, with health and safety etc and very few of the oil companies actually have their own drivers now they're mostly from agencies.
