I saw an episode of American Dad recently where Stan takes pills that allow him to stay awake all night whilst feeling like he'd had a full night's sleep, without any adverse effects to his health; and it got me thinking what I'd do if I could have the nights to myself while the rest of the world has to sleep?

Aside from having loads of time to clean and maintain my bike & go on some nice night rides, I'd probably start my own company or venture as well as keeping my day job. That and watch lots of films / read more books. and maybe make some bets with people that I can stay awake longer than them...

So, what would You do??

If you never slept, life would be a horrendous seamless event. The great thing about sleep is that you can wake up with an entirely different view of the world every day. That is a wonderful gift, and one that most of the animal kingdom appreciates.

Personally, I'm a big fan of hibernation....

My sleeping pattern is constantly changing, I enjoy being awake at night, it's when i feel I get more done. If I have a lot of work to do, I write overnight. The same goes for training, if I'm in the city I prefer running at around 4am, as nobody's around and I can get on with it. It's a great feeling of freedom (it's different when in the countryside). However I hate cycling in the dark, and choose to swim early in the morning after (which is what I'm off to do now).

Not sure about having no sleep though, it's a difficult one. It would double your lifetime and allow for you to do so much more. It's hard to asses the effect it will have on you well being mentally though.

I practically live without sleep anyway. I'm an insomniac meh I am lucky if I get 4 hours uninterrupted sleep.

I'm the same. I just get on with reading and learning stuff.

I do have to have sleep though as I quickly turn to mush without it. I worked days, teaching, and nights, at a homeless hostel, for a while and I was wrecked. I still didn't get any more or less sleep then usual but the routine was gone.

If I could stay healthy and lived in a detached house I could get on with so much work through the night when I didn't need to do day work or socialise.
Not sure that would be a good thing in a relationship though, unless you were both that way inclined.

As an insomniac, it's not nice on the whole. Sure you can watch films, read books, go for rides, whatever but after a while much of the time is spent on very dark thoughts, difficult to solve problems that rage round your head for hours on end, the nature of the universe and life sort of thing. One of the things I find very annoying is so called morning people pretending everyone is like them and their idealised tv commercials where you have a 'refreshing' night's sleep and wake up bright and bouncy at 6am. Life ain't like that at all. You get a huge spectrum of people who need anything between about 1hr and 11hrs sleep a night and it varies from person to person over their life. The 8hr thing is just an idealisation.

I have bouts of insomnia too and agree with Marinyork that they can sometimes get unproductive and frustrating. Without sleep I can lose concentration and find it hard to do the easiest of tasks let alone reading a book. I find that I used to be a night person and would get my best work done in the small hours of the night but as I've gotten older I'm just turning it around and have become more of a morning person. I love and need my sleep- can't function without enough of it.

If I was the exception, and could live without sleep whilst everyone else needed it, I would find a job where I could work flexi and work all my weekly hours in a day and a bit and spend the rest in the mountains.

If EVERYONE didn't sleep, I suspect we'd all just end up working longer, relaxing less, and generally in roughly the same position we all are now.
