where would you go that didn't involve more than a max of, say, 4 hours flight?
West coat of Ireland. Fly in to Cork, hire a car, head north for The Butlers Arms in Waterville. Hire a ghillie for both and go fishing on Loch Currane. Couple of nights then back south to somewhere quiet in Kenmare, Glengariff, or Bantry. September will be glorious this year in Ireland (I hope - I’ll be there)

We went late September, it was OK. I can imagine it gets very busy July and August. I felt sorry for the poor old donkeys in Lindos

Apparently they are very well looked after and have lots of regulations. They are only allowed to do a certain amount of trips a day and not if the temperature is too high.

Flying is unromantic. Take the Eurostar to Paris, TGV to Irun/Hendaye, and sleeper train to Lisbon.

Worst holiday we ever had was in Rhodes, Malta was a close second or maybe even matched it.
