I've made a mistake in the past and changed filtering lanes without checking properly. I felt a right twit for doing it. Been on the other end of this, just like the OP, quite a few times.

The crux of your argument appears to be that you were annoyed by the other guy compromising your safety by pushing into the space you had left between you and the next cyclist.. fair enough BUT how does your concern for your safety then allow you to deduce that RLJ is safe? That's a peculiar logic by any standard. RLJ is illegal and you compromise your safety and other road users by doing it.

I wasn't aware that I'd made 'an argument', much less one to do with safety. I just said the guy swerved into 'my space', and there's no excuse for being ill mannered.

What I find really annoying is the folk that swerve into the space 3 times in a row, once can be a mistake, twice maybe, a third time it is not obvious when you've passed them twice within 2 pedal strokes that its pointless.

An argument is an exchange of views, nothing more, although it can be a heated one. I hope this one isn't heated.
My point stands I think, you think he was being ill-mannered, I would agree. However you seem to excuse you own poor road manners RLJ within the same post, you can't have it both ways!

Ah, but I don't consider RLJ, per se, 'poor road manners', any more than I recognise it as pushing in. I'm not trying to have anything both ways. I treat everyone with courtesy; I see no reason not to expect the same from them.
