I'll never figure out how insurance companies operate.

I've just renewed my motorcycle insurance for my CB500. I asked about the excess as it wasn't listed on my renewal notice. It was £500. I asked to have it reduced to £250 and the premium went down when I was anticipating an increase as the company's potential liability in the even of a claim increased.

What's that all about?

Birmingham, Manchester, Bradford, Glasgow, all horrific for insurance. bath and Gloucester are good, and the highlands.

the post office used to allow doc cover with no age restrictions and the policies were exploited massively by young twats using the cover to insure them in Audis and similar. When the po stopped these extensions they received hundreds of abusive calls.

Motor insurance isn't a source of profits for insurers, they pay out more in claims than they take in premiums, the money is in the add ons, legal cover, breakdown etc.
That doesn't change my view on them.

Their aim is to screw customers, what's to figure?
Pretty much. A decorator we had in damaged one of the carpets in our house. We went to the insurance. All went swimmingly, loss adjuster came round etc and we got a phone call to say go and choose a carpet from our local carpet shop. We went to visit, had a look round, told the guy why we were there and were told "Oh you can have this one" pointing to a fairly horrible office grey carpet at £9 per square metre. It got worse. As it was a local shop rather than a chain, I actually got talking to the guy. It turned out that the insurance paid him £5 per square metre. The only reason he took the business was in the hope that people did what I did and chose a decent carpet and paid the difference.

Insurance companies are complete shysters along with warranty companies. Their whole business is based around "No we're not paying out, now what was the issue?". We're now cancelling all but essential insurance (buildings) and I'm just having repeated internet digs at Direct Line and More Than just for the hell of it.

Put my partner on the car insurance, premium went up. Split up, took her off. Premium went up. Why? Single men are more of a risk! Cake and eat it.

If your partner was younger or had points it would bump the premium. Always put an older driver on as a nd, it usually reduces premiums. you can also get good discounts with Aviva if you have other policies with them. multi product discount.

Are you talking about a broker or the actual insurer?

Motor insurance isn't a source of profits for insurers, they pay out more in claims than they take in premiums, the money is in the add ons, legal cover, breakdown etc.

They also invest the money. My former employer has a division for that very purpose. So insurance premiums are also affected by whether the market is a bull or a bear.

things can fall on cars in garages, but the postcode would be a more significant rating factor.

And just getting the thing in is a risky business. Cars were definitely a lot smaller when my garage was built.

I used to work in this field, the stories I could tell.

One chap applied to insure his clapped out clarty old beat up transit. credit checks came up blank, so we asked for a bill, something with his name and address on. he sent us a Notice of Intended Prosecution for fly tipping.
