So, dodgy plates...what do you do about it?

Seems to a "popular" mod with chavvy types along with illigal front tinted glass.I thought/hoped the Police stopped and made sure these "additions" were changed but I see more and more around here and they don't look like they are bothered !

Excellent stuff!

I have had a couple of plates changed after complaints to the Police about their illegibility

Funnily enough it is actually more expensive than some fines!

By the time they have paid for a registration that needs the illegality to work, and the cost of a legal replacement it is several hundred pounds for a plate that is now "normal"

I don't understand people who get obsessed with having their number plate "just so" ... it's just a bit of plastic that identifies your vehicle! For example, a biker mate of mine was walking round my bike on one occasion and said, "Oh, that number plate is shocking! Why don't you get a tail tidy?" My response was, "How is a tail tidy going to make it go any faster?!"

My brother put a tail tidy on his Busa, it made the bike look so much better, but he's still got a full size number plate on it.

I have to sit on the fence on this topic as I hold up my hands and admit my Jeep has illegal plates. Illegal because although the plates are on standard reflective backgrounds with full size plain legal font, they are spaced innapropriately to read J33P xx instead of J33 Pxx. My Jeep is a bashed about off-road toy so it seems kind of right to adorn it with the plate although this might pee some people off?

What really get my goat is the chav rollerskates where the number are thin, scrolly italics that are unrecognisable and there is a clear intent to hide the cars identity and avoid legal enforcement of the road laws. The problem is that the law thought they would deal with the problem by trying to restrict supply and making all number plate makers register and put their id on the plates they make but in reality there is a ready and easy supply mostly via the internet for 'show use only' plates made in any style you want (this is the route I went to get mine).

I think any attempt to evade being identified should result in points on the license.

They could start by making it a criminal offence to manufacture and sell illegal plates.

'They' did. but there is nothing to stop others making something that looks like a number plate for use on a show car in a static display on private property or maybe for marking an individual parking spot in the parking area of a private housing development. All loopholes admittedly but there are always ways around fixed rules.

I think when I bought my plates I had to tick a box to say I agreed that the plates where not to the required legal standard and are not for use on a legal highway, which of couse I did tick knowing full well that I intended to use them on my road going vehicle

If the law was changed so that only SORN'd vehicles could have illegal plates made, plus the maker of the plate having a legal obligation to inform the DVLA, it might put many people off.

How would it be taken by those who complain that bicycles don't have numberplates, if we had the illegal sort fitted. Like so many ther road users have.

BT had part of their fleet fitted out with numberplates that couldn't be read using a digital camera. Okay when viewed with the eye, but blank on camera(digital). Told one driver & his response was he'd shove what he had in hand somewhere else if I didn't shut up, two police officers walking in our direction at the time.

Show plates can be purchased without documents. And to be honest i haven't got a problem with show plates on cars or motorbikes, although illegal.
It's stolen cars with cloned plates that are the problem.

IIRC, if three people complain about the number plate displayed on a vehicle, there is a risk that the plate will be taken away from the owner.

When was the last time anyone here complained about the size or spacings of a number plate? Or would real action be too much to expect, when it is so much easier to just whine about it on the internet?
