I haven't changed mine since 1986. I liked the colour that year.

Mine ran out yesterday and I couldn't find the renewal letter (or the V5 - organised, me) Found the letter this morning and went to renew thinking at least I could do the monthly direct debit thing, but I didn't get the choice, just the old 6 months or 12 months. They're not going to send me a disc though.

I was flagged down by a policeman on foot for not displaying a disc once (it had literally just fallen off on the previous roundabout and was in the passenger foot well - he told me off and I didn't ask what he suggested I should have done given that I couldn't reach the disc from the drivers seat and I was parking in the first space I'd seen since it fell off. Different era.)

I find it a little strange that now the disc has gone - ie no longer printed with date of renewal that you can only renew for month end

The DVLA said it was always the case that car-sellers were only credited for each whole month that the disc was not used.

More a case of everyone leaving their renewal till the last minute and overwhelming the system.

Fines are generated after the 14th of each month.

When I finally get one of my classic cars back on the road I'll go through the pile of tax discs for it and pick the one I like the colour of most to put in the window...

I remember reading (maybe in Bike or MCN) years ago of a biker who wanted to annoy traffic wardens. The accompanying picture showed he lacquered every tax disc for his bike to the tank until it was completely covered in them. It looked pretty neat.
