I'm back from my first 'cycling' holiday

I say 'cycling' loosely, as I didn't do that many miles, but surely its more about what you do with your holiday, not how many miles you get in? That's what I am telling myself anyway.

Looks like you had a great time on Bute - very lucky with the weather, too! I love the "bike is like a dog" comparison, hadn't quite thought of it like that, but it's true!
You don't mention the Serpentine Road in your blog...

Hope this was just the 1st of many cycling tours, there is an endless supply of quiet roads, views to enjoy and places to see in Scotland ... what's next?

You'll just have to go back some day. I know I will ...

I've never been along the Caledonian Canal/Great Glen cycle route ... the south side of Loch Ness is stunning (if a bit "undulating"), if only it was easier to book bikes onto trains last minute when the weather is good! That's the difference between local trains/central Scotland/SPT area and the trains to Oban/Inverness/Fort William ... too popular and only very few bike spaces and very infrequent trains for spur-of-the-moment decisions.

Recently I've been looking at maps of the Borders, Dumfries & Galloway and Northumberland some more, in addition to a 3-day route in Speyside ... so many roads, so little time ... and a husband who is off his bike for at least 6-8 weeks due to a broken collar bone (somersault over an "invisible" speed bump, no less! ).

Very pleased that you chose to ride the trip you wanted to ride - not anyone else's view of what makes a "proper" cycling tour.

It certainly makes a difference when you can watch the weather forecasts and head off when it looks good

Glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the Island of my birth .
When you get the weather, Bute is certainly hard to beat. I was over there on Saturday (23rd), just for the day, as part of my "ABC" weekend. A circuit of Arran on the Friday, Bute on Saturday, Cumbrae on Sunday. If I had known you were going to be around I could have met you for some of Zavaronis finest ice cream .

PS... A bit late for you now; but CalMac have 2 ticket offices at Wemyss Bay, the "other" one being alongside the wall at the car parking area. Not well signposted from the train though, presumably as it's intended for car drivers going onto the ferry.
