If she likes The Kite Runner she might well like:

"Half Of A Yellow Sun" Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche

and "House Of Stone" Christina Lamb. This one's non-fiction but told as a compelling story of life in Zimbabwe.

I have a very simple rule for difficult to by for people at xmas.

get THEM to write out a list of stuff they want. at least 10 items on it.

make THEM do the hard work.

then pick the stuff of it you can get them/want to get them.

that way they get what they want without you sweating it, but they STILL get a "surprise" as they don't know how you will interoperate the list - plus there is always next year to get more stuff from the list

as they say, simples.

I did just that, I went into my LBS and wrote a list and left it with the owner, went home, told hubby what I did, so supposing I get ONE thing on that list, I will be very very happy.

Changed days for me, it used to be Stobo Castle or a trip somewhere, or a dress or perfume, now all I have asked for is bike gear

And I am only on page three or so of this thread, so if you have decided on a present for her now, forgive me

How about nothing, the pain will soon wear off.

I have just got back from my 4th shopping trip for the wife, few things each time is not too hard. Trouble is after 36 years it gets harder to be original, rephrase that it gets impossible.

Damn right. So I ask her what she wants.................and buy it. Simple.

I make up for the dullness of that by buying unexpected small gifts as and when the mood takes me during the rest of the year. Odd things that I feel she will like. Nothing necessarily grand or expensive but small gifts which show I care.

I know, I know .................I'm a saint.
