Gibbyent, I know what you mean about cycling in Norwich ...there are some idiots...but actually, the past few times I've been I've been okay.

i've had my arse slapped numerous times, shouted at, and deliberately drove at twice(once just to "frighten me" but the other wouldn't have stopped and i just managed to get out of the way... that same guy later had a go at another commuter from my workplace). Guys at work suffer verbal all the time. The police don't want to know and when it got back to the cycle co-ordinator at work what was going on with us out on the road, and the fact that none of us now want to approach the police anymore, he took the matter straight up to the director's meeting and now i've heard they are considering taking action against the police/private prosecutions on drivers if they don't start doing something to help us.

i must really love my bike coz any sane person would give up

Nice work!

I'm starting to get disallusioned (sp?) with following the rules of the Highway Code. Yesterday on the way into work I was called a self-gratification artist and told to get off the fuc*ing road and on the way home I was told the same but this time with the finger as well. Both times I was doing nothing that a normal human being would consider "wrong". I'm all for the argument that if we don't respect the rules then how can we expect respect from drivers etc......but I see very little respect coming the other way or drivers following the Highway Code. It's as if their driving licenses gives them the right to break any law that is convienent and f*ck everyone else! TBH I'm on the verge of killing the next motorist that pis*es me off!!

EMD - I totally side with you and share your viewpoints entirely !

I dont mind the verbals so much these days. It still annoying but you end up feeling worse if you also get wound-up. I'd rather give em a friendly wave and move on...it wont be long until another edjit turns up.

I found my experiences on the critical mass rides really helped in finding a healthy perspective on the whole car vs cyclist issue...the more the motorists would get frustrated and start honking their horns, the louder the cheer would come from the funny bike people. Its their problem - dont make it yours!

When cycling through Rusholme, every time there has been bad drivers! And a lot of them! Some idiot started reversing really fast in the main road (Wilmslow Road) once. Another time, I was nearly knocked off my bike by a driver who thought it would be a good idea to turn without indicating after he'd almost passed the road he wanted to turn down! As he could easily have killed me, I pointed out the error of his ways in a not so polite way (though I don't usually lose my temper, but I resent nearly being killed!).I've seen driving instructors that really shouldn't have a car, let alone a job as a driving instructor! It seems once you hit Rusholme, bad driving is all the rage!

Is it wrong for a cyclist to slap another cyclists Arse ?!

I see a lovely young lass daily on the way to work

Only if you are sure she doesn't post here. Either way don't boast about it, she will track you down.

I'm approaching the anniversary of my commuting life and can honestly say I do not recognise any of the problems aired in this thread. I must be very lucky or else everyone in Tottenham is permanently too out of it to get mouthy!

I'm getting used to being passed close now, when you think about it how many times are cyclists struck from behind by cars ? I know it's not right but it's a fact of life that cars will pass too close.

As for drivers giving you grief, how bad must your life be for you to be that stressed an hour after getting up? Road rage is proof that money cannot buy you happiness, your 80 grand car is still not getting you any closer to your city centre job or £1,000,000 "property".

There's only one way to deal with that road.

Take primary position and sprint/keep the traffic pace with eyes peeled and hands covering brakes.
