my first turbo trainer arrived yesterday and i gave it a bit of a spin last night and was really impressed. I'd read such negative comments on this forum that i wasn't sure what to expect. The set up was really easy and it's so much easier than getting all kitted up to go out late in the evening. Can't wait to give it another go tonight.

I suspect they can become a bit boring under certain conditions (and it's not the same as being on the road), but with a decent dvd on to watch, i'm sure i'd be entertained. Why do they get such negative comments??

Because once the novelty of riding in the warm at winter has worn off, they're mind numbingly boring after 10 minutes (to me anyway).

They are just a necessary evil, given the choice I'd be on the road. I use mine in the garage, mp3 player on with a big fan cooling me - far too hot in the house and only a few degrees in the garage. Hate the thing..... and haven't used it since last winter. Might get use this year if commuting is out because of ice or snow.......

I'd rather go out for two hours in driving rain than spend ten minutes on one of those contraptions, I hate them. Mine cost a fortune a good few years back, has a lifetime total use of about two hours and now serves as a handy maintenance stand.

Glad it's not just me then - lost count of the times my wifes asked me "Are you mad going out in this weather!"

I'm with Smoking Joe on this, got turbo used it twice, now only use it for a cycle stand, they're so unbelievably boring to use.

Horses for courses...
Just done an hour on mine (its raining here), watch TV, talk to the missus....its better than no ride at all..
Boring...yes, but then so is riding in the pitch black of the countryside. That bores me as well.

just spent an hour on mine while watching casino royale (very good film). A good workout although i'm sure i'll stil venture out as well as use the machine. Particularly good when you can't go out due to having to watch the kids

Just how much space do you need for one of these things? I've fancied one for a while so I can do a decent amount of training over the winter...

are they noisy?

if you can stand your bike up where you want to use it you will be ok. the turbo takes up hardly any space compared with the bike.

i've been on it for approx 50 mins for the last 4 days and it gives a hell of a workout compared with going out on the bike. Stick a decent dvd on (Basic instinct today) and it's an enjoyable way to exercise while the weather is cold and wet.

Actually went out on the bike last night and the first hill i came to i raise up out of the seat to get some extra effort and the bike seemed really weird. I thought there was something wrong until a realised i was used to the bike on a fixed turbo so it doesn't move from side to side. Took a good 10 - 15 minutes to readjust. Anybody else experience this?
