This is how silly it can get.

I was about 3rd on a segment, only a mile long but it was a down hill followed by an uphill. Went out, and got a good time on it. Uploaded. Checked it later on and noticed a handful of riders had beat me by seconds that day - funilly enough they all had about the same time - checked and they had all been on a local Sportive ride, that had gone through that segment (in a group). Well, that was it, next time I was in the area, I had to get my time back up :cycle:

I loaded Strava today, some of the climb times are chuffing improbable. One guy has averaged nearly 17 mph over the Wizard climb in Alderley Edge. I ride that regularly and anything over 10 mph would be good. The ladies best is sub 10 mph and I just can't see the blokes being 7 mph quicker. Katie Colclough who is a GB rider is averaging 8.4 mph up on her training rides over it.

Just checked some of the exceptional riders of climbs around South Manchester and Cheshire and half of them are Pro riders, Don't think I will be challenging any KOM's in a hurry. The chap with the record on the Wizard races for BMC.

I used the Strava iPhone app for the first time yesterday. Unfortunately, there were too many glitches in the GPS track for the overall results to be either useful or meaningful, but I was comfortably mid-table on the two existing segments that it successfully recorded - not bad considering I was on fixed.

Disappointed that it didn't register the Shooters Hill segment - the GPS seemed to think I was several miles away at the time. I think I would have come out looking pretty good on that bit. Didn't record Maze Hill either.

Need a better GPS device...

I don't think I've had any drops, been using it for about a month, it's a little compulsive isn't it. I just have it a ziplock bag (100 for 1.98) and keep it in my back pocket.

Whether I'll find it quite so compulsive after a year I'm not so sure, my times aren't going to alter much, and then there's the seasonal variation. It sort of needs a way of comparing segments year on year.

it does tell you the dates that people have acheived their PB's on, and you can check your own leader board for each segment.

my phone has just started resetting itself halfway throguh rides! is quite annoying!!!

Ahh, but I'll stop getting medals  ?

Still, 4 2nd pb's and a 4th overall on what was a pretty nasty day will keep me coming back

Had another go with Strava last night and it worked fine - no glitches at all.

Unfortunately, none of my segment times were anything to write home about. That headwind must have been stronger than I realised...

I meant to use it again this morning but forgot - annoying, really, as I managed to hit 46km/h under my own steam (ie not drafting) on the very flat Lambeth Palace Road. Not bad on a 65" fixed gear, I reckon. I checked on Strava and that road isn't even logged as a segment yet, so I could have awarded myself a trophy!

I won't even be attempting to compete on some of the segments on my regular routes though - especially not the appropriately named "Elephant & Castle Death Sprint". Strikes me as somewhat reckless to introduce a competitive element to negotiating that appalling piece of road.

Remember too that the start and end points on segments are often contrived.

It's a bit of fun and that's all.

Ok, I'm starting to get a bit hooked...

Three seconds outside the top 10 on one segment today and I wasn't even trying - next time...

Is there a CC strava group? Or failing that, maybe a stravaholics anonymous group?
