I am looking into getting a cycling coaching qualification within the very near future ....

My reasons for doing this:
  • Get more people more involved with the sport
  • See people improve
  • Learn more about the sport for myself
  • Earn some beer money on the side while at Uni
  • Use to to boast about when chatting to the ladies
How many people would feel comfortable attending training sessions reguarly (weekly) for a couple of quid a go (£2 or £3) on the open road with a 19year old cycling coach who is attending Uni? Would you attend if it was on an outside track rather than on the open road?

Would you send your child to child specific sessions? On open road? On a track?

Would you demands there was some sort of financial insurance should something go wrong?

you will need public liabiltity insurance i would recommend a minimum of £5 million. this is a minimum suggested to me by a County Council for riding with any members of the public.

is this what you are studying or something you are doing as a side line?

as an effort to get ppl to cycle great!
what are the aims, objectives of training these ppl? with the aim of getting ppl racing? why would i come to you for my training?

just some questions you may want to consider.

I would attend if the cycling coach in question could put the question in the correct part of a forum, otherwise I wouldn't bother....

Hmm....is it expensive to get that sort of insurance?

The aim would be to provide people with a more structured training session, working on particular aspects of cycling fitness which could benefit 1. general fitness and 2.give people more comfort with cycling in a group and close proximity to others 3. specific race benefitiary fitness ..... so chances are it would be alot of sprint work, as sprints are what win many of the lower cat races in the UK - especially in crits.

When you are formally qualified e.g. with a recognised fitness qual, then you apply to join a professional body such as REPS and pay your subs and take out their appropriate liability insurance.... easy peasy ..
the next step is to get enough clients to make your efforts worthwhile..

it has been noted on the other forum which has a few pro coaches as contributors that a lot of people want a lot of something ie good training advice for nothing but thats life and far too much information available on the damned web

A couple of client's have looked into this type of business(not in cycling) and have decided not to pursue it because of all the red tape nowadays. You will need to contact the local council, I believe, if you are working with young people so that they can do the sex-offenders checks etc.

I dont know the answer if the OP wants to coach kids under the age of consent or whatever it is called but the council have sod all to do with coaching of adults as a self employed trainer.

The OP does mention working with kids.

And even with adults the insurance etc can be a nightmare.

Not if you insure via a professional body that you are a member of though.
Being covered is not an issue.
Personally, I would never ever get involved with the teaching of minors - it is as you point out an area fraught with red tape and other assorted stuff.
If the OP is going through BC , again that makes better sense.
I come from a stand point of being a fitness trainer who does classes, it's quite simple..
people are 'covered' by the umbrella of the location - i.e. fitness club ... they come in voluntarily and I spit 'em out hopefully wrecked after 50 minutes or so

How about instead ?

Now let me think, it's about coaching/training.....how about Health and Fitness?

Not too difficult really is it, this thinking before you stick a thread in Cafe lark? ....

But I am not asking any questions about health and or fitness. It is actually a question which is about the community and community involvement, which makes the cafe an ideal place.

If I wanted to ask how to coach somebody, I would go to Health and fitness. If I wanted to be coached by somebody, I would go to Health and Fitness. If I wanted to find out anything about health and fitness, I'd go to Health and Fitness....

...but I am asking advice on how to attract as many members of the community as I can and as a by product some advice on what kind of legal requirements are necessary with insurance and such. Such a general topic is most likely to be best situated in the general forum. For all my question asks, I may not give a toss about anybody's health and fitness and just want to make a few quid (though this is not the case).

If I asked what people would like be specifically trained on, then perhaps your dig would have some substance.

Not too difficult really is it, this thinking before you post lark? ...

Montage, I do know someone who is a cycle coach, she is similar age to me but has been doing it in London for a while & is quite respected. I will look out her information, as it is a few months since I heard from her, she may be able to give you some information. She actually coaches people for cycle racing.

If you want a forum where every topic merges into one another without a specific/general relationship to a topic, carry on.

I'd rather have a forum where I knew I'd get a sensible reply to a question in an area specific to the question being asked. It seems to make sense to me that a question about coaching/training, even how to go about attracting people to coaching sessions, fits better in Health and Fitness than in Cafe; which is not a 'general forum' much as a lot of people seem to think it is!
