Me too. People have been formally disciplined and sacked for surfing and "inappropriate" use of the internet at my workplace. One temp apparently used to download stuff from i tunes and go to porn sites. He was dispatched pretty quickly when discovered. To look at him you wouldn't have thought it about him either.....
I haven't got the time for recreational use of the net at work anyway and in my lunchtimes I prefer to do other things - when I manage to get a break at all. ;)

downloading from itunes ffs! it's paid for so why the hell not, it's not like surfing the internet for illegal tunage. perhaps the itunes thing was thrown in to beef up the porn charge.

That's local government for you. The IT provider has sent an e-mail around recently to people who have their own CD's loaded onto their laptops to listen to while working....They are going through everyone's folders and deleting the lot. We are allowed to listen to MP3's though.

The IT bods where I work have gone on a real power trip recently and have been blocking access to loads of sites, including the site we use to check our Business bank account. The good thing is that they haven't blocked access to Cycle Chat yet!!!!

seems to me that IT has gone from a facility that let you get on with your job without having to worry about sorting the technical problems out, to having a remit to make users jump through hoops in response to IT "policies".

You've obviously never met the IT security SS or the even worse IT auditor Gestapo. One of them even made me lift the floor in our server room and then suggested I hoover the cavity space: He very nearly didn't leave the room:-

"head office just rang. They're missing one of their auditors apparently, haven't seen him have you?"
"errmmm.....nope!"
"OK. What's that funny smell?"
"What? no, can't smell anything."

I have to email people in my job (5/6 people work where I work) and most of the time I'm called on, verbally, soo if Im doing something REALLY important thats gotta wait to do the other really important thing...

All the depots got an email once saying about internet usage this was prior to me actually getting it i.net access compared to only one comp having access...

Pulled up MSN messenger (yes that was me) online shopping (not me) porn stuff (ok, I'll admit that but it wasnt a 3hr film - mostly google without the safe search on) and internet banking/shopping (not me)...

The supervisor, if you could call him has pulled me about it - so I went straight passed him as he had the gall to say he'd talk with me once he got back from a meeting - so I wasnt going to left on the hook and told the area manager (I have mixed feeling on him) told him all the sites I go on...: = i can only go on occasionally during dinner or quiet times. !

RESULT...! ;) - I just keep the usage down as much as I can though I do like the bbcnews site as I am tucked out of the way in work...locationally.

yenrod, you just tell your boss that if you do not make regular appearances on CycleChat he is going to have a load of cyclists banging on his door wanting to check on your welfare.;)

I really need to stop. I usually flick on, fire off a few posts and then flick off, but even that must add up (especially if it's every hour). It really isn't good, but then I hate being bored.

Hey BJB,
Assuming your boss expects 7 hours production from you each day. Stealing 14 hours a month means He is paying you for 24 days a year for nothing. It is no wonder that the techies are up your a**e.

Yes, but you've got to get something back off them where you can. Let's face it, your employer won't hesitate to shoot on you if and when it suits them, so why shouldn't you use their internet connection sometimes?
