I lost control in an unanticipated way. I went 'off piste' after the first port of call.

Anyway, Greenwoods in Boroughbridge does a very tasty pork and apple pie. I had just the one. Though I did buy two pork pies for a friend that I was going to visit in Darlington. John Tipping the proprieter asked me if I was just passing through and I told him about the purpose of my visit i.e. use the butchers as a control point and he was very curious about the reasons i.e. charity, sponsored and laughed when I said it was just for a laugh.

I then discussed the in and outs of hot water pastry and my failure to make a decent crust with it. Then followed a discussion about other pie parlours and the etiquette of eating warm pies. I've been invited to call in tomorrow morning to pick up some spare pastry from tonight's pie making to give me an idea of what the texture should be like and give me an opportunity to try it out. What a man!

The traffic on the A1 was heavier than anticipated and I passed Thirsk as I was late with the pies for my pal. He's eighty five and I didn't want him to have a late lunch. I'd aimed to have a good chin wag with him and then call into Thirsk on the way back to Leeds. However, fate deal a blow which scuppered the Thirsk visit - Joe's kettle blew its element just as he was about to make a brew before I set off for Leeds. He's been immobilised by a recent hip replacement and so I went on a mission of mercy into Darlington to get him a replacement kettle. While I was there I picked up for of Taylor's finest pork pies to deliver to a pal and his wife in Leeds. By the time I got the kettle sorted, it was too late for Thirsk.

Still, I've made three people happy with pies from two counties.

Me? I just had one. All day!. Dunno how I managed to behave myself.

Boroughbridge beckons in the morning followed by Thirsk.

Warm pork pies are just wrong.n Some types of pork pie taste wrong when warm

Fixed that for you.

Pie serving temperature cropped up in the conversation that I had with John Tipping. His pies taste fine when cold he claimed, his pork and apple pie supported this view. However, Taylors pork pies from Darlington are far nicer when warm with the gravy still runny, fact. The queues at the pie counter on a Saturday morning bear testimony to their popularity it has always been this way for at least the past forty years of my (now intermittent) custom there. Appleton's warm pies from Ripon are also served warm over the counter.

I reckon it's a geographical thing regarding temperature preferences.
