I'm trying to convince myself that a 21" (54cm) will be fine for someone 5 11"

I find its top tube length that matters I'm 5' 10" & ride a 54cm Kinesis a 54cm in other makes may be differ but its only a stem swap to get it right.

I would just change the stem. How long is the one that is on it? Also, look at the width of the bars

I know, that's what I suggested and he reluctantly agreed....I'll measure the one on it and post later, but I know I need to get out and try it for real, it's one thing going up n down a smooth floor in a shop but another outside

I also asked if doing that would it affect the warranty, he said no

Edit again.....as you said to Vic....I'll see how I on with the bars, if to wide, I'll change them....Christ the way I'm talking, maybe it will be just to big...mmmmmm

You shouldn't be questioning your purchase already.

To me it sounds like it's too big and everyone knows it's better to go (slightly) small than (slightly) too big.

58cm is awfully big for someone 5'10", I'm 5'8" and my 56cm compact geometry frame was too big!

I am 5'9.5ish and I ride a 54cm.

The tribans seem to come up a bit smaller, but not that much smaller. Lots of people seem to change their stems too

It doesn't feel to big....I'm 5 11 and it's a 23"......I got an email from one of the shops I phoned to say that they got a cancelation of a red T3 and did I still want....I'll phone them tomorrow and if I can exchange (as it's that's what u was after from the word go), if they won't, I'll keep the 5 and get used to it.....or try lol

I don't care what u think either....as I said above, I'll phone the other shop tomorrow, if they'll change it, then I might, I have even put my arse on it since I getting it as the weather's crap

I said I don't care what you do, I did not say I don't care what you think.

You and only you can decide whether it's too big or not.

Bike sizing varies greatly depending on frame geometry, but judging from your height, the bikes geometry and what the salesman said, I'm willing to bet it's too big for you. Changing stem length can help, but can only do so much... if that is the case then why not change it for something that fits from the outset?

At your height you should really be on a 54cm or 56cm.

Riding a bike that's too big isn't a great idea as you will be far too stretched out... which in turn leads to aches and pains... which in turn will most likely put you off cycling for life.

This is a leftover from racing mentality. The smaller of the 2 frames will be more stiff and light, but it doesn't have anything to do with comfort. You can fit smaller stem the same way you can fit bigger ones, and unless you need 3ft of seatpost showing, just lower your saddle!

EDIT: I really wanted a road bike ages ago, so I bought a bike that was too big because I could have it now, I ended up with a 61cm Giant TRC. I had it for about 2 weeks before I just gave up.
