i don't know anything about bikes, but I know I want one like Peewee. I'm not sure where to start and what some of the parts are even called, making this dream difficult for me to pursue

I'm assuming you're in the UK.
It will be relatively heavy and there won't be a spread of gears but enough to get you around town.

Are you after something similar or do you want to build a replica?

If you're after a replica some people have done this (Here's one, and another), if you really, really want it to look very authentic then getting an old Schwinn might prove difficult but should be possible to do a good job with an off-the-peg cruiser bike if you can find one with a similar look.
