Then, frankly, thats their problem. If they choose to live a long way from work, or work a long way from home, then they must factor in a responsible way of getting to and from work; being part of serious traffic congestion that chokes our towns and cities is not responsible.

And allowing motorbikes in bus lanes will put people off cycling. You don't solve the problem that way.

Wow Cab, that is a bit of a selfish angle you posted there ;)

We have already established that using a motorcycle helps to reduce congestion, and doesn't significantly add to it in the way that 4 wheels does.

I live in the town centre, but have always worked at least 5 miles from where I live (last job was 12 miles each way). Who in their right mind working in the city or east end wants to live there also ?

What if you work in an area which you can't afford to buy in ?

The motorcycle provides a good alternative if health, distance or poor weather limits the ability to cycle commute.

A few questions for you.

How many accidents have you seen or heard about have been involving a motorcycle and cycle ?

How many accidents have you seen or heard about have been involving a Bus or HGV and cycle ?

How many accidents have you seen or heard about have been involving a Car and cycle ?

How many accidents have you seen or heard about have been involving a Pedestrian and cycle ?

Try keeping things in perspective eh

PTWs in bus lanes confirmed on the Transport for London Road Network:

Valerie Shawcross

How will you measure the success or failure of the first 18 months of
allowing motorcycles in bus lanes?

***Answer from the Mayor:*

I have asked TfL to draw up proposals to permit motorcycles to use
with-flow bus lanes on the Transport for London Road Network.

The success of this experimental measure will be gauged by measures
including the safety of road users.

Start date: 2009

What I find interesting is the Mayor's double-standards. When asked why he wanted to get rid of bendy buses the mayor replied:

The perception of safety is an important element in whether people decide to cycle or not. The bottom line is bendy buses contribute to the perception that cycling is unsafe, and it is my intention to correct this perception in order to get more people cycling.

However, it is hard to see how allowing PTWs in bus lanes is going to contribute to the perception that cycling is a safe activity. I seriously doubt this move will encourage more people to cycle.

As for the trial, I'm prepared to wait and see how things pan out.
