Just finished a week's long work stint in the US, and took my bike with me. I'm very impressed at the facilities out here in San Jose. There are masses of cycle paths on the roads, each easily 6-8ft wide and well surfaced. The best place for bikes I rode was up in Marin county north of San Francisco where it really is bike heaven, with smooth roads, close to every road with a bike path (sometime segregated) and some wicked hills with close to no traffic at all. I racked up 275miles in 5 days with over 27000ft of climbs, including two trips up Mt.Hamilton (an HC climb). To say that it was a fun trip is an understatement, but I'm dog tired now.

What's the best place you have cycled and why?

Smooth roads in Marin? You were lucky. I generally find the surfaces here worse than London, however, considerate drivers, sunshine, winding mountains and huge cycling culture make up for it

Chicago was very cycle friendly when I was out there a couple of years ago. Cycle lanes seemed to have priority over roads when I went for a bit of an explore around the city and along Lake Michigan.
