I have A530 pedals which have spd on one side for clip in cycle shoes and a flat platform on the other for riding in trainers etc.
Especially in the wet I find the flat side a bit slippery so have modified them by drilling them and fitting studs made out of a bit of broken MTB spoke.
Measure the diameter of the spoke and drill some holes to match in the rims of the pedal not quite right through.
Insert a piece of spoke about 3mm longer than the depth of the hole ,put a bit of superglue in the hole squeeze the stud in with pliers.
I did one pair about 3 years ago and they are still working fine. Just modified a new pair for another bike.
Make a huge difference when pedalling.Your feet wont slip off.
