Did anybody see Gareth Malone's 'The Choir - Military Wives'?
Coming from a choral background, I've a deep appreciation of the power, joy and value of singing in a choir. 2 years ago Mrs FF became a convert as a result of watching his program having never sung a note in her life, now she sings in 4 concerts/year and absolutely loves it.
Whilst the format is now well known, setting it in the claustrophobic confines of a military base was a great TV idea. A program with an uplifting and positive stance. Yet again the magic seems to have worked and even the most cynical cannot dispute the sheer joy and comaraderie created.
In a smart move they got Paul Mealor to compose a piece based on words and sentiments from the wives letters to and from their husbands in Afganistan. The result is a piece entitled 'Wherever you are' which showcased at the Albert Hall Service of Rememberance and is now to be released as a single. Have to say I blubbed heartily watching them. Listeners to Radio 2's Chris Evans show will be familiar with the piece. The score is now being released to schools and anyone who wants it to enable more to join-in and share the joy. It's very much like a modern day carol, if nothing else it has something of the spirit of Christmas and good will to all men about it. After years of X-factor Christmas No1s I hope it does well.
I'm sure we can all be cynical and dismissive, but fair play to the BBC, Gareth, and the Wives, anything to promote singing, community and good cheer is good by me.
I shall be buying my copy as soon as it's in the shops.
Profits will go to the Royal British Legion and the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) charities.
