Vice President in Exile
I've just finished a paperback collection of the ghost stories of M.R. James and what a delight they were.

For those of you who have not read them, their greatness lies in James' powers of suggestion. There is no graphic horror or blood and guts. I found myself having to read more attentively and even more slowly than usual and let my imagination take flight. This might add up to a requirement to take on a Victorian writer on his own terms. I suppose that ideally one would read them by the light of a candle.

Anyway, for anybody with a taste for a chilled thrill running down the spine, I heartily recommend these stories.

I'm sure that somebody else on here will have read them and will be able to provide a more eloquent recommendation than I.

The BBC filmed many of his stories in the early seventies, and Robert Powell did a series of readings in the eighties that were broadcast at Christmas on BBC2. They can be found on Youtube.
