Over the festive period I had occasion to laze in bed and started listening to the Van Gogh letters... just fantastic, 5 x 15min programs (still on I-player) of letters between Vincent, his brother Theo and Paul Gaugin. Simple and beautifully performed. R4 at it's best.

thanks for the tip. I'll give it a whirl. My recollection, now long frosted over, is of pleas for money, but I'm sure there was more to it than that.

On the other hand - did you hear P.D. 'who is this Brian Alldis fellow?' James on the Today programme? What a self-obsessed dingbat! Finishing the programme with a bit of Tennyson in the hope of inspiring the listener to valour!
