I know there are plenty of cosmopolitan types out in CC-land, people who swear by rice, or noodles or pasta or other foreign stuff, but, for my money (recalls florins, sixpenny bits and half crowns - wipes tear from eye) you can't beat good old-fashioned spuds!

I'm not suggesting that we invented spuds (I believe they came from the Peru) but one of the great pleasures of living in dear old Blighty is that we put the humble tuber to such varied and (yes, I'll say it...) exciting use!! Let us consider, for a second, or for a second helping (tish-boom!) the ways

chips on their own
chips with other stuff
mash
mash with gravy
roast
boiled, with lots of butter
hash browns
scalloped
potatoes dauphinois
leek and potato soup
potato salad
shepherds pie
fish pie
samosas
vodka
rosti (yech!)
bubble and squeak (hooray!)
colcannon
baked spuds!
and, lest we forget..
potato CAKE!

take it away..........

...no arguments about the versatility of the best carb in the world; I have a piccie somewhere illustrating their usefulness somewhere; I'll try to dig out.

Piss poor photo but my solanum (potato plant) is still flowering too!!!

I really like Pan Haggarty (sp?) and stovies. But they have to be made with dripping.

Ooo yeah, I do a stovie recipe - peeled new potatoes, chuck in loads of olive oil and water, peeled cloves of garlic (as many as you can get away with), course salt and pepper - cover and simmer on minimum heat for ages. Shlurp!

I think you'll find, 3BM, that the jacket potato is so irredeemably middle-class that you are wasting your time trying to prole it up with baked beans. It just looks like class tourism; like self-conscious slumming. You just have to roll with it. There's a reason it was missing from the OP, you know.

I do like a nice side plate of American Home Fries... no not fries as in French Fries.. Home fries, as found in that staple of American life, the Diner. Diced or sliced potatoes cooked on the griddle with onions and peppers. Scrummy scrumptious.
