Alton Towers has, apparently, banned chaps from wearing speedos.

This seems rather curious. I've just come back from hols in France and the campsite insisted that gents not wear board-shorts and sport something altogether more revealing. Board-shorts are considered unhygenic as I understand it. Bro-in-law and myself had to pay a trip to decathlon to acquire attire suitably skimpy swimmers.

Having seen the effect the french chappie on the pitch next to ours had on Mrs DP with his unnecessarily brief scarlet speedos, I rather think that Alton Towers may be on to something here.

I am curious how a bikini can be OK, but speedos not. Methinks, this is the fashion police at hand here. It was perfectly acceptable to wear speedos in UK until about 20 yrs ago and as Delfte has pointed out, they are a requirement in some parts of Europe. I had to buy a pair to get into a local pool in the Ardeche region and now always take them on holiday to Europe in case I come across a similar restriction.

I am 'almost' tempted to go Alton Towers and create a fuss. On 2nd thoughts - no thanks, don't really fancy the idea of Alton Towers.

The French rule on boardies always made sense to me. They want you to wear stuff that you use just for swimming, not shorts that you've been wearing all day around town.

Quite right. The French are very correct on appropriate attire - I remember when I lived in Paris and it snowed. People were walking to work in moon boots and ski jackets. I overheard an elderly French lady saying in shocked tones: "People are even walking around in sports clothes!"

The rather portly Dutch gentleman, next to the McGinty family at the beach on our recent hols in France, with his speedos pulled up nice and tight makes me think that Alton Towers would be doing us all a favour!

Yes - shorts fashion is a godsend for today's increasingly porky men. Just like untucked shirts, which hide that beer belly on a 25 y.o.

If you want to swim at Alton Towers without having to don board shorts, just wait for the next naturist event. Then you can all carry on the 'nads: shaved or not?' debate in person.
