Just seen this on the BBC website - first death on the Cycle Superhighway network, apparently. RIP.

Horrible news. I cycle this route fairly regularly and am greatly saddened, but not entirely surprised, that a major accident has occurred here.

Truck kills cyclist, driver arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Driver found to have a history of such incidents, employer having a history of employing such drivers, driver gets £200 fine and 3 points on their license and told not to do it again, everything back to normal. Its that deja vu thing all over again.

More focused information can be found here. It is clear that politicians are fully aware of the dangers that exist at this point but have abdicated responsibility in favour of political point scoring and petty argument.
This is absolutely shameful, it is another blow against cycling in the city. It is a further example of politicians failing to give decisive leadership and deal with issues which fall within their remit. If this was in the private sector then there would be an investigation by the the health and safety executive as to why proper safety measures had not been put in place.
These politicians and officials are unfit to hold high office in industry and so put themselves forward for public office where there is little or no accountability. DISGRACEFUL!!

There is an error in the title. This incident was at the start of CS2.
Fortunately everyone I know who uses this junction takes the flyover, so they should be OK.

A few Corporate manslaughter charges against TFL managers would shake them up. Boris is interested only in "smoothing traffic" -ie, making roads faster for vehicles.

Which indicates how poor the roundabout is, as the flyover is hardly cycling nirvana.

RIP cyclist.

News from John Biggs: John Calls for Urgent Safety Measures at Dangerous Junction
25 OCTOBER 2011

Local London Assembly member, John Biggs, has today called for urgent safety measures to be implemented at the Bow Flyover following yesterday’s death of a cyclist.

John has raised the dangers of the Bow roundabout at two meetings with Transport for London officials and in a written question to the Mayor of London. On each occasion he has been told that there is no obvious solution which would not cause massive traffic delays.

Local London Assembly member, John Biggs said: "My immediate thoughts are with the friends and family of the cyclist who died yesterday.”

“I am very angry at this tragedy. In my view, the fact that the junction has not suffered previous serious accidents is more down to luck than judgement. There has tragically been a growing likelihood of an accident waiting to happen there for a long time.”

“If safety measures cause traffic delays then that is in my view a price well worth paying."

John has also been contacted by a number of worried local residents, particularly those living in the growing number of apartments at the western end of Stratford High Street, who need to cross the Bow Roundabout to reach local transport stops (Bow Bridge and Bow Road and Bromley-by-Bow stations are their nearest stops) while there are still no pedestrian crossing facilities on the roundabout.

What's the problem with it then - that the blue paint invites collision?

I rode it both ways a couple of weeks ago and tackled it normally, ignoring the paint, and have to say that despite it being busy I didn't see any real problems.

I spoke with a couple of people who knew him. A member of Twickenham CC (I believe) and commuted from home (Hounslow, according to the police) to Stratford. Even a week of that commute would make you are pretty experienced London cyclist.

A lot of the Superhighways (are you listening, CS8?) seem to put cyclists in harms way. I don't know this junction, myself.

While searching, I found this

Dear Boris Johnson,

I very much admire you as an engaging political character and an advocate of the green and healthy benefits of cycling in general. That said, I hope and expect that you must be greatly saddened by the death on Monday morning of a good friend of my family and me, Brian Dorling, at the Bow roundabout.

From what I understand, it seems frankly appalling that cyclists are actively encouraged to follow a corporate-sponsored cycle route that leaves them at a junction already and widely known as an accident waiting to happen.

There is a ghastly irony that while London is promoting cycle access to the Olympic Park, Brian - himself a keen amateur sportsman - should die cycling on his way to work as a surveyor on this very project.

We shall support his family at this time as best we can, but I would also hope that yourself and Transport for London also do not let him down.

Brian's death has been reported as the first on the so-called 'Cycle Superhighways'. His legacy, and the ultimate success of these schemes, is to ensure that his is also the last.

Please assure me, and those of us close to Brian, that (without reference to the consequences of interfering with the flow of motorised traffic) cyclists will be warned they are entering a Danger Zone at this location and that alternative routes are provided and that suitable signage is erected.

I look forward to a positive response that may bring some recognition and comfort to his family and those others of us who are now without our friend.

Yours sincerely

Mr M Maynard
Twickenham
