Incident on A8 in Edinburgh

Man hits woman, how very brave, not.

We don't have to get sexist here: that's a nasty assault no matter what they have in their underwear.

We all know we get angry when we have a near miss - it was obviously one, as the driver thought she had hit him. And the cyclist obviously thought it was her fault. She did the right thing and pulled over. If he had done what I do and try to explain to the driver what happened, how it could be avoided next time, how vulnerable cyclists are - called the police if he thought it was necessary - then maybe something would have been learned. All he has done with this is turned himself into a violent criminal, and her into a victim. Oh, and given people a reason not to stop when they hit a cyclist.

And king-hit a woman.

At the moment we only have one side of the story, not that I am condoning the cyclist's reaction, but it must have been a pretty bad manoeuvre to have gotten that reaction from the cyclist, she may actually have hit him. Until we have some witness reports, or the cyclist's side of the story we will not know what actually happened up until the point of the punching.

Someone will be changing their commuting route.

Interestingly enough it means they elected to cycle on the dual carriageway rather than use the cyclepath.
It is a tortuous route right enough but I'd never risk the A8 at that time of day. Too high risk.

I'm glad I don't have to cycle it often but I've suprisingly found that a good section of road and I can get a reasonable speed up but as I say my experiences are limited (2 or 3 times a year at most and usually on a Saturday) and if I couldn't get a decent speed up I don't think I'd entertain it. There are usually better parallel roads to take for me in any case.

used to cycle that way but found it very dodgy and the cycle paths even worse so now I come across to Crammond via Burnshot road, much better. The description is ringing bells as I have seen assuming they still have the same gear a dude fitting that description but could not ID them. Thing is something has happened and the guy for whatever reason has lost it but will we ever know what!

Shocking report, no matter the cause of the arguement no need to hit a woman, brings us all down in the eyes of the other motons unfortunately

I agree we don't know the facts from both sides, so probably over spoke. However, if the fundamentals are true: that he struck her and then fled the scene, he has pretty much lost the high moral ground. He could have stayed to make sure the police got his side of the story.

Of course, if a driver had knocked him down and injured him much more seriously than a perforated eardrum, it wouldn't get a mention on the bbc site. I typed "cyclist injured" into the search box at the top of that page, and it doesn't get many matches in march. To wit: this article, one death, one serious injury and 12 cyclists knocked down in Brazil. Notably missing is the death in South London where the driver has been arrested.

Another "man bites dog" news story.

Horrible isn't it. A cowardly act. I'm sure if she had been a bloke built like Geoff Capes the cyclist would have managed to hold his temper.
Unfortunately we'll all be tarred with the same brush, Lycra louts, blah blah. When people launch into a violent reaction they can never be sure where it is going to end. Several times over the years there have been occasions when one punch has been enough to kill somebody.

About 20 years ago the was a guy round here who nearly got knocked off by an older bloke. Words were exchanged and the cyclist punched the driver. Long story short, witnesses named him , police prosecuted him, and a judge gaoled him. 90 days. At the time road rage was in all the news and the judge said there was too much of this going on and made an example of him. He subsequently lost a well payed job with prospects and a good pension. Violence is never the answer.

Although.............I did watch one video on you tube ( I think it was one of Carlton Reids ) where an obnoxious woman was sat in the passenger seat, with the window down, ranting on about road tax "no pay no say, ...no pay no say...NO PAY NO SAY!"

There seems to be a few posters almost justifying violence against women, saying "we only know one side of the story".
There is no justification for violence against a woman, thinking like this died in the 1970s, when it was acceptable to beat women.

It would be nice if this case did actually get solved, if there is video evidence it may help.

Plenty of neds in Edinburgh, but a guy wearing a helmet and cycling gear doesn't sound like one of them, i stayed 10 years in Edinburgh, it isn't all a tourist paradise, and has the same problems every other city has with violent behaviour/anti social behaviour and violent assaults on the streets

How does saying "we only know one side of the story" almost justify violence against women?

I don't see even the slightest hint of anyone justifying violence against women, I think we are all 100% against violence of any sort, i certainly am. But lets not convict this guy just yet.

If he is guilty of hitting a woman then I hope he goes the prison for a very long time.

Just the way i am reading it, why is the other side of the story even needed?
It is violence against a woman, what does it matter what the other side of the story is, if not to justify the violence?
The only other way i see it is the violence simply never happened, but why then is it being reported as not just one blow, but several?
