still can't see it.

Oh Bliddy hell... have tinkered some more. If it's still locked I dunno what to do :banghead:

That comment you made about using the car for other things... Since I have started commuting by bike, my formerly bike-commuting girlfriend has taken to borrowing the car to go to work. good job I love her

, if they are unhappy with 3 hours daily stuck in traffic, being unfit and overweight with accompanying health problems, spending too much on travel to work (though I need to be careful with this one - as cycling can be pretty expensive too).

...can be, not 'must be'. I _have_ to insure my car, fill it with fuel, MOT it annually, and really should get it serviced regularly.
They're not really optional costs.
Bike... well, servicing is maybe on the list, but they cost a lot less.
And then my mars bar consumption will probably increase.
But everything else is optional expenditure. Makes a world of difference that ;)

20 miles round trip adds about 500 calories to your daily consumption, probably the equivalent of two snacks away from main meal times.

Actually, that's useful - I was wondering how much energy I was using on my bike ride. I'm a little edgy about balancing calories, after a few stints (yes I know, it's daft) of cutting back on food, whilst upping gym time, and finding that I 'just crashed' after a week or two.
500kcal for my daily commute (which is _about_ 20m) is perfect - I can eat exactly the same, and reasonably expect to lose weight steadily .

I was thinking about asking the bosses to introduce car parking charges. Thought that may encourage others to cycle to work

Or mean that you come out of work every evening to find someone has let your tyres down. Whatever your life choices are, you can educate others of the benefits, and they can choose to accept or ignore it. They pay a premium sum to keep a car on the road and run it. If they chose that over other forms, then that is their perogative.

Can see it now.

Chapeau! You clearly have a much higher tolerance for riding in traffic than me, seeing as your extension takes you right through one of my personal 'no-go' zones, north of the A3 south of Ascot. Every time I've ventured there on two wheels someone has tried to kill me.

My employer is a global bank (not one that took any bailout money before we dive off down that thread). They positively encourage working from home 2 days per week. They also encourage cycling to work, so 2 days I now bike to work 8 miles each way (now doing that in 35 mins vs 45 when I started). We need more employers to encourage in this way.

I tend to agree with this. You get to see bikes versus cars on public days at the Nurburgring, and typically bikes are faster on the straights, and slower through the corners. I tend to pass lots of bikes, but only recall being passed by a bike once or twice in the cca 140 laps that I have driven there.

And yes, have played 'spot the write off' - it's usually quite obvious

Just of interest (and being totally ignorant of 'The Ring', what sort of lap times were you seeing when driving there ?

My best measured BTG was 8:51, but lap times there are so dependent on track familiarity (a lot of the sequences are blind) and traffic, that I probably only timed less than 2% of all my laps. It's generally accepted by long term ringers that it's far safer not to time. Some of my funnest laps were in pouring rain, with a completely empty track and sideways on every corner  Probably no faster that 10 or 11 minutes BTG.

Actually the worst section is from Byfleet to Cobham, I hate that piece of road. Sadly I have literally zero other options for getting south of the A3

Oh and for some reason there's always a chav looking for a fight between Ascot and Bracknell

Sounds quick :becool: . What circuit layout is that on ?
