Very surprisingly, Alastair Cook is captain.

Presumably leading England to a joint record eight Test defeats in a calendar year is what is needed to succeed. FFS :headshake:

The ICC's voting period covers play from 14 September 2015 to 20 September 2016.

Still a little surprising - I would have thought that Kohli's record in that period was pretty good -

But he's not a good captain. Has little strategical nous and no imagination. He might be a good bloke and well respected by his team, but he's hardly a great motivator of men, IMO.

If Cook does stand down (apparently, the crowd in Mumbai were chanting 'Captain Buttler' all the time - maybe they know something we don't) and Root takes over, hopefully he'll regain his batting form and have another 3-4 years of Test cricket in him.

His batting form has actually been solid this year - over 40 - so let's hope he wants to carry on as opener. While I agree that it's time for a new captain, is there any reason to suppose that Root is an inspiring leader?

England have a history of appointing decent players to the captain's role and they then become gash, the only captain with a better than 50% win success rate in recent years* is Michael Vaughan.

* prior to Vaughan you have to go back to Mike Brearley's captaincy to find a captain with a win rate of over 50%

I do wonder whether a new captain will improve England's results or not. I'm not convinced Root or anyone else is a fundamentally "better" captain than Cook. So to me it boils down to the impact on Cook's batting of no longer being captain weighed against the impact on the new captains' batting.

I'd stick with Cook. It's so tempting to change captain in the hope/expectation of it being some panacea but I can't see a better captain than Cook in the side right now

Can you cook root vegetables in a pan, acea, and get your Buttler to serve them?
Bleedin' hell, and I'm not even drinking yet.

Prior to the Bell being rung, you've got a Broad chance, if you get the Ballance right and go up the right Ali.

No, nor me.

in the meantime I will be following the Aussie tour to India in February to see how they get on

Having got themselves into a decent position in the second Test courtesy of another non-spinning spinner - the Aussies succumbed to the English disease - had a gettable target but lost 6-11 - All square
