Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Thank godness for the great God Google.

Having shared a coffee with him in Stockwell a few times, back in the day, I'd say it is how he speaks. Why should folk have to place artificial and arbitrary limits on the language they use I wonder? Why can't folk take delight in the language they use?Guess it depends upon the writer and the context.
In interviews I have heard with Will Self, he always seems to come up words, where a more commonly used word or expression would suffice. I can never work out if he is doing it deliberately as an expression of his perception of his self (sic) worth, or he is one of those people who naturally have a wider vocabularly range.
Why the assumption that folk don't know the meaning of a word without having to Google it?Thank godness for the great God Google.![]()

Several of which are either wrong or or only right if you're a complete pedant. Dear old Harold Evans. For interest see the Guardian article on 'the 35 words you're probably getting wrong' as examples of precision.
I used to think that erudite was a very strong glue![]()

I used to get a magazine called Araldite Monthly, I just couldn't put it down!Did you know that Araldite, Aphrodite's less well known sister, is the Goddess of glue?
That reminds me: They don't do Rag mags anymoreI used to get a magazine called Araldite Monthly, I just couldn't put it down!
Good call - haven't seen one in ages. The studies used to do a bed push too down the local highstreet too, rattling tins and buckets, but it's probably a decade or more now since they stopped. That reminds me: They don't do Rag mags anymore
I like Will Self's writings—he obviously enjoys words, and his enjoyment is infectious.
