Guess it depends upon the writer and the context.
In interviews I have heard with Will Self, he always seems to come up words, where a more commonly used word or expression would suffice. I can never work out if he is doing it deliberately as an expression of his perception of his self (sic) worth, or he is one of those people who naturally have a wider vocabularly range.
Having shared a coffee with him in Stockwell a few times, back in the day, I'd say it is how he speaks. Why should folk have to place artificial and arbitrary limits on the language they use I wonder? Why can't folk take delight in the language they use?

I am not saying people should place arbitary limits on the language they use. I sometimes use words in everyday language my wife wouldn't. If that's how he normally speaks, kudos to him for having such a wide vocabularly.

Did you know that Araldite, Aphrodite's less well known sister, is the Goddess of glue?
I used to get a magazine called Araldite Monthly, I just couldn't put it down!

Good call - haven't seen one in ages. The studies used to do a bed push too down the local highstreet too, rattling tins and buckets, but it's probably a decade or more now since they stopped.

I quite like that CC has a good mix of simple, easy to digest posts, along with some very erudite folks who use words I've never heard of and have to go off and Google to find the meaning. I don't have very good recall though so whilst I find some words fascinating or "clever" I forget them and miss the opportunity to look brainier than I really am. ;)

I will forgive James Joyce, but not his choice of words. Stymied me for ages at school. 'The ineluctable modality of the visible . . .'
