"Ineluctable" ??

What's wrong with good old "inexorable"?

Guess it depends upon the writer and the context.
In interviews I have heard with Will Self, he always seems to come up words, where a more commonly used word or expression would suffice. I can never work out if he is doing it deliberately as an expression of his perception of his self (sic) worth, or he is one of those people who naturally have a wider vocabularly range.

Ineluctable is more along the lines of inevitable. So it's something which can't be avoided or escaped, but not a physical thing which can't be avoided or escaped. At least, all the examples I can think of apply to abstract nouns such as power, intelligence, etc.

That said, he was quite possibly showing off since inevitable would have been both applicable and rather more widely comprehended.

No, because whilst inescapable is a synonym for ineluctable a prison cannot be inescapable, because that isn't what inescapable means

Thing is that English is a very precise language if used properly. On the other hand it's a language where it's pretty easy to be understood with a limited vocabulary.
Self uses language in it's precise way, often OTT nut it is unabiguous.
