The three sisters steak house in Rembrandtplein is very good and not expensive. Lovely part of town too.

Not the best, but what about Subway, Sub of the day is about 3 Euros.
Btw, if you want any snack foods (biscuits etc) while you're there, go to Lidl, the shops prices are on average 3 Euros for cheap biscuits!

In Amsterdam, there are a lot of Felafel fast food places, from the Middle East (I think). All the students eat at them, and there is a policy to load up again with salad FOC. They are very tasty actually, and you will not walk out hungry, or be in need of a meal for about eighteen hours!
BTW, like you, I stayed at the van Onna last year. A great hotel on a quiet and beautiful canal, and very bike friendly. I preach to the converted...sorry. Have a great trip.

Edit: I just realised that the stuff I ate two weeks ago in Amsterdam contained no meat. Yikes!

When thoughts turn to liquid refreshment, I'd suggest:

Brouwerij 't Ij on Funekade
Hesp on Weesperzijde (bit of a pootle out of town along the Amstel)
Gollem on Raamsteg
Arendsnest on Herengracht
In de Wildeman on Kolksteeg

All fine places where you can sample some more unusual brews.

If you want anything to bring back de Bierkoning and the Cracked Kettle (both v close to Dam square) are excellent.

De Bierkoning looks fantastic - just had a quick look at their website ...

"ABOUT THE SHOP

De Bierkoning has been selling thousands kinds of beer in the past twenty five years. On our shelves you'll find at least a thousand different beers and about three hundred different beer-glasses. We pride ourselves in having the largest selection of beers in the world. We don't try to have as many different brands as possible, we simply try to have the best ones, world-wide."

Well what a fantastic weekend. Hotel Van Onna has to be the best placed hotel in the city for 45 euro a night. Lying in bed with the window open at night, listening to the church bells and the occasional bike riding past was one of the most relaxing experiences I've had in a long time.

Went to Kantjil to eat on the first night. I thought we'd been conned by Uncle Mort in to blowing the overdraft when we walked in and saw the place. But it was very very reasonable. A great meal for 35 euro. Thanks for the tip.

We also hired proper Dutch bikes yesterday to get to the Van Gogh museum and have a pootle around the Vondelpark. It's a whole different cycling experience. Upright, coaster brakes, flat cycleways. Very laid back. I could really get used to it.

I spent a few days in The Netherlands in May, and know exactly what you mean.

If you order before 6.45 there's a e9.95 special.

Let us know what you think.

Took at recommendation from a colleague in the end and went to Tempo Doeloe.

A bit more expensive than Kantjil and essential to book (seemingly its recommended by Lonely Planet). I'll give Kantjil a go another time.
