I remember there being some talk on this matter a while ago, but I've forgotten, what is the exact science behind this?

It's a quote from Pliny the elder, who believed badgers inflated themselves as protection against attack. Who'd have thought it eh!

Pliny the Elder [1st century CE] (Natural History, Book 8, 57): The badger protects itself from blows by inflating and distending its skin.
See http://bestiary.ca/beasts/beast4721.htm for more fasinating animal facts.

I assumed Montage meant post mortem. Any animal will bloat after death, in the right circumstances, something to do with the gases given off during decay being trapped inside the body...

This is all well and good but what if you want to manually inflate one? Which end do you go for? And are they Schraeder or Presta?

Don't be silly. Think where they live.

They are old fashioned enough to still use Woods....

I was talking to a friend about this, and remember Panter's awesome thread, hence why I have resurrected the topic briefly

Just read thro' the original thread. Excellent

Ta for bringing it to my attention.

A few years ago a badger ran out from the hedge (very narrow lane) and appeared directly under my front wheel. I went over the top. Bike survived but I tore muscles in my back . Bl**dy badger didn't leave his insurance details - it cost mega bucks for the osteopath to sort me out

So keep inflating those badgers
