I put on new tyre and inner tube, checked everything was okay,
And rode 20 miles no problem,
The next day i did the same, but after 5 miles i heard a loud bang,
I then found a 2 inch tear on the inner tube,
I returned the tube with receipt to Halfords where the Mechanic said it was my fault and the rim of the tyre could not have been right,
He would exchange the tube, but only this time,
Was he right.
I took this is as a slight threat.

"mechanic" and "halfords" used in the same sentence .

It does sound as though your second punture was caused by the tyre coming off the rim. The most likely reason for this is because you hadn't seated the tyre correctly.

The bead of the tyre must be under the lip of the rim all the way around; and the inner tube must not be caught between the tyre and the rim.

Normally when you put a tyre on incorrectly and pump the tube up. The tube will go bang as you're pumping it up. (and your ears will ring for the next hour.) It is unusual that you got 5 miles down the road before the tyre came off.

Yup, I managed this yesterday for the first time, got so paranoid fitting the next tube that I was wearing earplugs! Thought I was safe now as it hasn't exploded so far, but from the op's post it sounds like it can happen quite some time later... xx(

I once exploded a slime filled inner tube. I've never dared use one again since.

I guess the when the tube expslodes is all down to the pressure being used. You can probably pump a tyre up to say 30psi with the tyre incorrectly seated and not notice; but at 100psi if that tyres not on correctly it is going to explode.

A big gash/rip in the tyre can also cause the tube to explode.

blow the tube up a bit before reseating the tyre, it lifts it up into the tyre and away from the edges of the wheel

I did! At the moment I'm not doing very well at all - must have averaged a puncture a day over the past week! An exploding tube was the last thing I needed :-( And yes, the idea of an exploding slime tube is unpleasant to say the least...

A puncture a day over a week,i would check your rim tape,i had 5 flats in a week a few years ago on a new bike and replaced the crappy factory rim tape for velox and not a problem since.

Good luck

There's no reason anyone should get more than a couple flat tyres a year ... unless they're riding around a tack factory, or building site!

The most common cause of repeated flats is:

  1. Cause of puncture not removed from tyre
  2. Bead not seated
  3. Pinched tube
  4. Worn out/broken rim tape
  5. Witches

I had an innertube go bang on me at the weekend. I just put a bit of air in it(not in a tyre, inner tube just in my hand) to see if it had a puncture and if it was fine.
JUst about to take the valve off from the pump and it went bang. Not loud because there wasnt much air in it, but it made me jump:laugh:

6. riding in London where the roads are terrible and littered with glass, wire and pieces of metal junk

Nope, all in different places on outside of tyre, rim tape fine, caused mainly by hawthorn cuttings although one glass was involved as well...

The one-a-day is averaged (including multiple ones in one day), the hawthorn, seen too late, caused more than one puncture in one go...just a very unlucky spell I suppose...was talking to a nice police man on a bike today - he got loads recently as well.

I usually average one every few months, so witches it is I think...

Or 7/ Riding on most of the trails around RCT where the local intelligentsia find it highly amusing to smash beer bottles, tear open cans and basically throw anything sharp they can over the paths. A ranger to clear a 5 mile route and the next day you would not know he or she had been their. ;)!
