Whats the best type of inner tube to get?, I've had my Genesis Hybrid bike now for about 6 weeks and was fine until 2 weeks ago when i had 4 punctures in 5 days and then this morning the seam where the valve enters the tube split! very annoyed as a i was only half way to work with no spare and no A-Z so had to walk the remaining 5 miles.

Are there heavy duty ones that are harder wearing? or should i go for tubeless ?

thanks

Any tube can get a puncture but generally speaking the better and more expensive ones are worth getting. I would suggest that you buy two and always carry one as a spare for the commute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Check that there aren't any sharp bits on the edge of the hole in the rim that the base of the valve might be chafing against.
I use Schwalbe inners these days. I could tell from the feel of them that they were better qual than my previous ones.

Hi

I'm using Continentals ansd Schwalbe Marathons (not the plusses) and they seem to be very good.

If you're having a run of incidents might be worth checking your rim tape hasn't moved. This happened to me and when i checked the tape had got hooked round one of the spoke ends, presumably when fitting the repaired tube back in.

I'm new to cycling, but I'm pretty sure if you have had 4 punctures in 5 days there is something wrong with your rim rather than the roads you are cycling (unless you make a habit of bunny hopping on glass?).

When I got my bike I had a similar problem with punctures... When I checked, the tape inside the rim had moved... certainly worth checking for that, and whether there is any sharp debris stuck in your tyre...

Possibly chrisk but tyre and inner tube quality come into it as well.I use armadillo's and the inner tube is 4 times thicker than normal (apparently).Have only only had one p@nct@re in months and that was when a nail went through the tyre.I ordered the inner tubes off of ebay and when I first bought them I thought I had made a mistake as they seemed as thick as tubs.Good as gold though but I would guess the weight of them slows me down.

I bow down, Hackbike.. I'm a newbie

In my case, I haven't had a puncture in 8 months.. but quite soon I'm going to have the mother of all punctures - my tyre is so bald it's going to burst!!! Better see to that before it happens on a road somewhere...

Tyre wear is the other common cause of p*s. No matter how good they are they will eventually wear thin, and then you'll p*. However a 6week old bike shouldn't suffer from this - was it 2nd hand? have you been riding 1000miles a week?

Always carry a spare inner tube with you (or two) it's just much much faster and more convenient than patching the old one (which you can then do in comfort and leisure at home).

Like Johnson's friendships, a man should keep his wheels in constant repair, and if this means replacing tyres frequently, then so be it. After all, time is money as anyone who gets paid for the actual hours they work knows. Are there any tests on tyre wear/p*nctu**s/cost of tyres available in consumer magazines?

Don't say that word.

Just because you are a newbie and I have been commuting for almost 28 years doesn't mean I know it all.

Additional:

These are the inner tubes http://innertubes.notlong.com

Says 700x28/32 on the box I just noticed but works okay with 700x25.

That's the guy I bought them from.

28 years? how many different bikes is that? And more to the point, how many miles?

8 months, 1000miles, bald back tyre...

Any similarity in the type of 'P'.

same point in relation to valve?
single or double hole? etc

Other question, are your tyres pumped to max pressure. Surprising how a tyre 'hard' to the touch can be seriously low on pressure when a pressure gauge is applied. Low pressures was a contributing factor to the majority of my early 'P's.... Luckily I learnt quickly:smile:

Not had one in months (touch wood) that could be down to a serious downturn in the amount of cycling, but I do still get out occasionally and been running the bargain end of the CRC stocked ones.
