Dear All

So upset by this had to get it off my chest. Examine

I was travelling from phone box to spot ht 56 around sharp rh bend (this is right of way). Aware of car behind coming into bend. Car starts to overtake completely on wrong side of road. Stick hand out to motion it back - still keeps going. Shout 'You must be insane u will kill someone'. She (as it transpired) kept going. I was in complete shock - yes the bend is almost as blind as it looks.

The car drivers mantra 'I must overtake, i must overtake, i must overtake.

PS I was in primary to stop anyone overtaking. Perhaps we need primary plus.

Its a sad fact of reality, there are too many with that attitude.
Dont be putting that into peoples head,it would be carnage:biggrin:

It's not uncommon, unfortuantely.

On my commute, there's a point where the road dips into a right bend under a flyover - concrete walls either side, very small pavement. Drivers persist in overtaking me on my bike as I go under the flyover, irrespective of my road positioning. They just cannot wait for the road to open out again the far side.

They cannot possibly see what's coming the other way. And if there was something coming, what would they do? Hit the other vehicle, or swerve left into me, or send me into the concrete wall?

this is far from uncommon these days. I ride once a week on a Sunday afternoon because it is generally quieter on the roads around the villages. Even then I cannot remember a recent ride that has not had at least one seriously dangerous car manoever which has put my life at risk.

This is only going to change when there is a reporting system introduced that will show up consistently bad drivers who can be either sent for additional driving training or banned for a short period as a deterent

As a newcomer to cycle commuting I think the biggest danger I face is from close overtakes.
What I have found from talking to biking and non biking colleagues is (massive generalisation here) that car drivers that overtake too close, on corners, in pinch points etc. do not realise that they are doing anything wrong. The oft-quoted "I didn't hit you did I!" summing up the opinion.
My commute is mainly on unlit rural roads / lanes; often the road will be entirely clear of oncoming traffic but an overtaking car will give me the minimum possible amount of room, why?
I wish there was a system that I could use that would generate a friendly email to the vehicle owner pointing out the error, if the owner received more than X of these from different sources then they could get a visit from their local PC with a copy of the highway code. I know about betterdrivingplease.com and the like but I think it is only the aware drivers who look a these places.

Welcome wesa! Like many instances of this kind, they happen where there are no cameras, no witnesses, and because there's no actual contact, the driver goes on their way blissfully unaware of the mayhem they could have caused.

Really, if a driver's in that much of a hurry they have to overtake too close / on a blind bend, they should try leaving home 5 mins earlier. Impatience seems to be the problem.

I tend to use a loud Oi and a pushing out motion to any close overtakers. Over time the regulars get educated and give much more room, and it's not only the overtaker that learns from the bit of driver education, but often the two cars behind them.

Does this mean you'd have been wobbling along in the gutter? Or are you talking about the overtaking car?

A while back I was in a sweeping right hand downhill bend and even though I was in the primary, doing 26mph plus and the bend was quite tight with high verge/ wall totally blocking visibility some woman overtook me. Unfortunately a car was comming the other way and she swerved in hard on me. I don't know how but some how I managed to slam on the brakes and jump over the pavement to the verge on the otherside and I was OK. 5 minutes later she had a crisis of concious and came back to check if I was OK, "Oh I thought I hit you", "you would have if I hadn't of braked "

Hi and welcome wesa.
Thats probably the most worrying thing, most dont realise what they are doing, all i can say is keep your eyes open and always take the safest option,it doesnt matter if it costs a few minutes for you in time, you will be a happier and safer cyclist.

I know the road - used to work on the Industrial Estate - people just drive too fast down there - it's a narrow lane, but they use it as a rat run....

I seldom get close overtakes on the trike and as wobble is never induced it is always going to be less of an issue, what does worry me though is when drivers overtake on a bend or on a busy road then have to cut in, once they see a car coming in the other direction a cyclist seems to become expendable.

There's no call for that. It was a genuine question, based on you having put the sentence "perhaps we need primary plus" (quoted from the OP) in red. I was just wondering why you'd done that. If you prefer to answer with mindless insults, that's ok too.
