Hi all, we bought a used bike for our son without much inspection and, yikes! He tried shifting it and the rear derailleur went into the rear wheel. So, I got it running and now want to get it shifting. I do not know much, so any advice is appreciated. First off, the H and L adjustment screws are bent like bananas (see photo). Does anyone know what size they should be so I can replace them? Does this mean the derailleur is dead? Does this alone possibly explain the aforementioned problem, or should I be looking at other things as well? In the end, I'd just like to make sure it is operating fully and smoothly. Thank you!

I believe, but of course I could be wrong, is that the limit screws are M4 x 18mm. Your local bike shop, LBS, should be able to advise.
The ones on the mech are well mashed for some reason.
There are plenty of videos on YouTube on how to adjust the mech.

The reason the RD went into the spokes is because the L limit screw was dysfunctional. The hanger may have been bent in the process but likely not the cause.
:welcome:
The threads in the RD body for the limit screws (per image) will likely be screwed swidt.
Replace (echoing @C_R and @cyberknight advice above) and here's the best option (silver, worry not about the Claris image shared therein) - £14:

Will need a new cable too (but save the current one for the next time you have to replace the/an FD cable).
Check hanger alignment (for verticality in both planes) as part of the (v easy) install - 5 mins.

Indeed, these dérailleurs have a claw mount, no hanger to straighten.

Well, there is the hanger part of the derailleur to straighten - lord knows how often I did that on my son’s old bikes as he discarded it driveside-down every time he left it.
