Good quality group sets will far outlast the cheaper counterparts,& top end frames will usually have the option of good group set.The preferred option is to specify a new build.

Without a doubt, either of the Canyons,

Far better spec kit, and both frames are highly rated.

Your difficulty is now Alloy with Di2 or a carbon frame, The Canyon AL frame is top end stuff like Canondale alloy frames.

Both are great.

Hi - I test rode the Ridley Excalibur a couple of months ago. It was the green version which was pretty bright, the black and red version is lovely though! Great bike, and good value with the reduction at Pearsons. I ended up going for a different bike but it was a close run thing. For £2k or a little bit less there are almost too many options. I guess the best thing to do is test ride as many different bikes as possible so you get the one that suits you most

Have a 2011 Excalibur, in special edition Flandrien paint job. see page 42 of 'Show us your Carbon'. No electronic shifting, Campag Centaur only but with Ksyrium Elite S wheel upgrade and Jagwire cables. A bike that far outstrips my ability as a rider, but a wonderful thing to ride.

Thanks for all your opinions so far

I received the follow up call from Wheelies and they went through the various options and obviously offered the Giant Rapid 4 as the like for like replacement and then tried offering me a Giant Defy 1 or Scott Speedster 20 as a replacement for my Specialized Sectuer Comp as they were trying to price match to the £1200 it's worth but included all the accessories I bought on top of the Comp which I told them I didn't want them to do. Anyway after going back and forth telling them I wanted them to price up a like for like for just the bike with full 105 not mix and match they continued to tell me the Scott was the best option but I disagreed. I did speak to the guy about combining the cost into one to which he said they could do and if I then wanted to add further money that is also available. From what I could see they don't really offer anything with full 105 for similar value (to my Spesh) and the closest I could see has most with either Shimano non group brakes or tektro brakes. I was trying to stick to my guns on the full set so that they would agree to go over the £1200 in order to get as close to that amount as a cash settlement after Wheelies discount for Esure but he kept saying they won't go over £1200 as that's the maximum claim allowance.

It looks like I may have to stick with getting something from Wheelies as I can't really afford to lose a chunk of money because of this discount they're going to deduct from a payout for going with someone else. I'll be speaking to Esure tomorrow and argue my case again that Wheelies have been unable to offer a suitable like for like replacement based on spec and see what the maximum I can get paid to a different supplier will be. Hopefully it won't be back to the drawing board with a new list.

After all of this my advice would be to avoid Esure if you're looking to take out contents and add your bikes on. Now I've got experience of a claim I'll definitely be asking more questions before choosing my next bike policy that's for sure.

After more discussion this morning with Esure, they said as Wheelies are unable to offer me a similar spec they'll pay the full £1600 towards a single bike if that's what I want with a company of choice but have to let them know and they'll send the cheque to that company.

I'm now whittling it down to the Ridley Excalibur with Pearson's and the Focus Cayo Evo 4 at my local lbs Twenty3c. Pearson's however are out of stock and won't be in till possibly end of next week but they are totally out of the black which was my can't go wrong colour so said I'd like to have a look at the green as that is certainly eye catching with the white being a little bland but may be different in person. I'm going to have a look at the Focus tomorrow afternoon which I'm looking forward to as really like the look of it and it's got Ultegra/FSA mix which looks decent and will take a look at the other models while I'm there in case the geometry doesn't work for me. Also have a Giant/Cube dealer nearby who I've always been loyal to so will pop in there and see what they have on offer but said to my mate I ride with that I wouldn't get a Defy as he's already got one and would be a little upset to be riding with me if I had one lol.

Im assuming you were happy with specialized as a company, so if you want something a little more aggressive why not try a Tarmac sport?

£1500, so you can afford 105 brakes...and possibly tyres too.

Not sure bout the wheelset though, but that would be the same standard for most bikes of that price from a large brand.

As with most spesh bikes this year, you have to see them in the flesh because the colour schemes don't look as good in photos. This one is black with a fade to carbon that doesn't really show up on a screen.

A friend of mine has the Focus. He found the geometry too aggressive, but having flipped the stem and put spacers under the bars, the feel of the bike is a lot less agressive

Paul, the Specialized was good it's just I think for the money there's probably better out there which I've found.

Vickster that's good to know as they've also got the Ergoride series too which I'll take a look at side by side as that's meant to be the comfort range but was looking for something between comfort and a performance ride so will see how the Cayo feels.

Thanks musa do you work there or do you just like what they do hence your avatar? The guy I spoke to in the pro shop was helpful and said they'll do a full fit when I go down to make sure I was on the right size and so on. On the website however for the small they're still listing the black so would be good if they got those in. Either way I'm sure they'll all look better in the flesh so could make up my mind on colour once I see them.

Cool an insider ;)

I spoke with a guy called Will in the pro shop who gave me his email and said he'd keep me posted. Hopefully they get a small in black as per the website but otherwise will go take a look at either of the others. He said hopefully end of next week which should tie in with me getting my refund from Planet-X for my wheels.

I couldn't go see the Focus last night as the shop owner had to go to the tour series in Norfolk yesterday as they have a team there but going tonight. Instead I went and looked at some Giant's and the Cube Agree GTC SL and SLT. There's something about matte paint jobs that I really like, the SL is out of stock in a 53 with Cube however they can get the SLT which has got the slightly better finishing kit so that's now added itself to my list if the Ridley doesn't come in as it's £100 more than the Ridley without the Di2 but personally the best looking bike I've seen.
