I hope this is not a daft query? but when folks on here go tour especially abroad do you take out any insurance to cover any mishaps thefts etc.In my youthful days i never used to bother but now i'm an oldie and planning a bike tour next summer i think i will.

The only insurance I would bother with for touring abroad is good medical/repatriation cover. The cost for theft cover and the clauses just wouldn't make it worthwhile for me. Interested what others would do though.

Make sure any repatriation cover covers your bike too as most don't.

Theft insurance is possibly worth it depending on how much stuff you're carrying but obviously the bigger value of the stuff the more the premium is.

Most 3rd party insurance through CTC and British Cycling for example include 90 days insurance in the EU and a month in the US (not always though, worth looking if you are going to the US) as standard. If you are staying in the UK then 3rd party is fine as long as you are careful with what you're carrying and don't leave it unattended.

Agree that the main thing to cover is repatriation if it all goes wrong, baggage and bike cover is usually poor and only payed out if you are mugged most other instances your gear was "unattended" even if in a room.

The main thing that will affect your choice in insurance is the lengh of the trip and and where you want to go (USA/Canada can be alot more expensive). Most insurers drop off at the 12 month point pretty much the rest at 18 months.

Read the small print well and contact the company and tell them you'll be doing cycling touring as a primary activity this also seriously affects the price with most companies.

I did alot of research before my trip....here are my findings....

Good luck, its a mine field out there......
