I'd say you might not need brakes for the following reasons:

• You only ride on a velodrome
• You only ride on your own private road (which you bought when you won the lottery), where stopping quickly is not a requirement
• You never go faster than 8mph
• You live in a place where all the hills go up, not down
• You don't mind replacing your back tyre every 100 miles
• You prefer to let your knee ligaments take the strain rather than bearing the horrendus stress of using two fingers on a lever
• You don't mind not being able to stop quickly, especially in wet weather
• You don't mind having to be even more observant and forward-thinking than you already have to
• You don't mind endangering other people
• You don't mind dying
• You're an idiot
