Right I have an interesting one. My house has 2 access points (both routers one set up as just an ap with dhcp turned off), you can access files and internet from everywhere but only access the UPnP share from the server on the hardwired/top floor AP. I need to access it on both if poss or bottom only if pushed.

Server (via hub) - Router (and another machine) - AP (top floor). The - is a lan cable.

The server is of the opinion that its network is run by the top floor AP (despite getting its IP from the router and only being connected to the top floor AP via the router) so only seems to provide UPnP to devices on that network, also netbios names seem to always work on the upstairs wireless network and not always on the downstairs for a vpn connection (though using the IP seems to).

I don't understand this issue really and my xbox is downstairs and is used to stream recorded tv/dvd rips via the UPnP server to the lounge tv

Depending on the router you may actually have to enable upnp via the router settings. I have exactly the same type of setup, two routers, one set as an access point, dhcp on one only. Both are Buffalo Airstations (one doesn't have a modem) and there's a setting in the LAN configuration page to enable upnp. Goes without saying that it should be ticked on both routers. Default should be the ticked state, but you never know!
