Until a year or two ago we still had a proper DIY shop in Widnes
it was called Manbys

if you needed something then you could just do there and ask someone and they would either answer or get someone who could

but people complained that they were a bit more expensive that B&Q so after struggling for ages they closed down

The building is still empty and doesn;t look like that will change soon

so no DIY shop and not tax from it going to the Local Authority

Screwfix must be the DIY version of Halfords as our local one isn't like that. 😂

In Ipswich we had Martin and Newby and in Hadleigh, Partridges. What you could`nt buy in those stores probably was`nt worth buying. Men in brown coats who knew the products. Back in the day, John Grose, Ford dealer in Ipswich, parts department was like that. The only difference there was that you went in for a part for a Cortina or whatever, out would come the microfiche . Search and then part found, trundle to the stores and come back. I can dream. All those places are gone. To be fair John Grose is still in existence but I doub`t there are men in brown coats.

Reminds me of a sailing shop in West Kirby when I was sailing every week

the whole damn place was filled with "stuff"
they had run out of display space many years before and had loads of bits and pieces stuck to the ceiling

if it had a use on a sailing dinghy or small dinghy they had it
how they found anything was a mystery - probably involved a prayer or sacrifice to a Viking God or something

just going in there was enough to cheer me up!!
