Several banks now give out a small pad where you insert you chip and pin card, type in the pin and you get an eight digit number to use when you login on line.
I have had one for ages for Barclays. Mrs C just got one for a Nat West account. It wouldn't let her login (using ATMs and shopping was OK). Nat West said it was because she didn't order the reader specifically for her use, so they sent her another which works.
We were deciding what to do with the original one so I tried it with my Barclays card and it let me log in to my Barclays accounts. Now on Tuesday, I will go to Barclays and ask them why my account isn't very secure when I can use another bank's pad to get the number to log on to mine.

RSA tokens they aren't !

Isn't that an example of that rare animal - 'the IT Standard'

The original national plan was to allow device interchangeability because the first series of devices were big and they did not want customers to carry multiple devices. So a number of banks worked together. It is secure. The first country to think along those lines. Now the devices are much smaller and you can even have it as app in your mobile, the interchangeability will go.

Saved you a visit to the Bank.

Fair weathered, fair minded but easily persuaded.
I have two of these things for different banks and have no intention of carrying them around but it's good to know that if i did i could use either of them. I may try that for the various different ones i have at work, of which i have many

It's not new. My dad once opened the boot of his Hillman Avenger with the key to the neighbours Morris 1000.
A mate of mine once came out of the pub got into 'his' car started the engine and went to turn on his cassette player but it wasn't there. Closer inspection revealed they had left him a child seat conveniently already attached to the rear seat.
Luckily another car was 3 cars away and his cassette player was still in it.

They are interchangable because the banks use the same security system. I have a Barclays account and a Nationwide account I can use a number generator to log into either account. It doesnt matter, they are not specific to an account.
