How lovely. We need more police officers who take this kind of thing seriously.

When somebody smashed into my rear end not once but twice at when I was stationary at red traffic lights (in car), then left the scene, the police didn't even bother going to see him for two weeks, by which time he'd had damage to the vehicle repaired and a couple of mates prepared to swear blind he didn't do it!
He eventually admitted it,but no action was taken. How he didn't get done for careless driving, leaving the scene and perverting the course of justice I don't know. But these
situations seems all too common.

I think this shouldn't be being discussed by the OP on a public forum!

The OP has a responsibility to carry out his duties impartially and the very fact he is talking about the case here, to what could fairly be described as a biased community could be said to be undermining his position.

I disagree. I think the OP will have the ability to distance his own personal views, whatever they are, from the interpretation of the law.

No confidences have been breached or other details given away, so how could it prejudice the process?

It's an interesting contribution and lets others know that if things like this happen to us that something can be done.

My recent dealings with Cumbria Police were........erm...........bollocks!

Carrying out my duties impartially, whatever my point of view is very much what happens on a day to day basis. It's called professionalism. Despite being on the side of the cyclist, I would never dream of not fully investigating the offence. Making sure there were no mitigating circumstances such as the cyclist not displaying lights, riding recklessly etc. Trust me I would prosecute a wrongdoing cyclist as quick as a motorist. There are quite a few cylists around Peterborough that have jumped red lights, ridden on the road without lights after dark etc that can testify to that.
As long as I am not putting specifics down such as names and vehicle indexes, I am not undermining the case

I would hope for nothing less! It's just that your opening post could be construed as suggesting you were using this case as an opportunity to dish out some revenge on behalf of your fellow cyclists. I personally think that in your position it might be better all round if you didn't talk about work outside of work?

That would be a bit harsh... I'm a cop not a secret agent. The opening post was merely a light hearted comment about something I was dealing with.. trust me, I wouldn't be talking about it if there was a possiblity that harm could be done by doing so.

We are all entitled to our views and they are often a reflection of ourselves. Say if a person thinks another shouldn't talk about something as they may cross a boundary, then, that is about them, not the person talking about it initially. I see no boundaries being crossed here.

My view of course

In part it's good he 'fessed up. But it's still Careless/Dangerous Driving & leaving the scene of an accident IMHO.

And I saw it as you simply doing your job

It's not a war out there! Anything that pours fuel on the 'them and us' opinion isn't constructive. We're all road users and have to share the roads. Prosecute the knob heads but don't discriminate!

The point is you are in a position of trust and responsibility. You shouldn't be discussing details of cases on a public internet forum whether or not you are naming defendants or witnesses. Period. You don't know whether some one could identify the defendant or witness. Haven't police officers been prosecuted and convicted for divulging information about on going cases? You could inadvertantly interfere with the course of justice. Police officers' conduct should be beyond reproach. Please stop.

Crankarm, mate, you seem to get a bit carried away about the PoPo. Please let it go. Most PoPo are very good, IMO, and Vike is one of the best.

Crankarm, life is high pressured enough in this job without being able to talk about it. I do not name people or places. I certainly would not be talking about something if it was more serious.
Bearing in mind, most people thinnk the Police are spending all their time sat in McDonalds drinking coffee, surely it is better that communities, including the cycling community know that the Police are out there doing something?
