No Sky+ No TV for at least 2x weeks

Next door neighbours have just put up a scaffold to remove their chimney and we've lost our signal.
Couldn't be worse really. I'm sure Mrs P and I could manage with radio, CD's and the internet but my elderly Father who is staying with us is going to be a nightmare.

Poor old Pop has short term memory problems and therefore has difficulty reading. He can manage his comic ( Daily Mirror ) and the crosswords but loses track of everything within a few minutes. It must be awful to have forgotten the first part of a paragraph by the time you reach the end.

TV is the only way we can keep him amused and occupied in the evenings.

hand me a razor blade somebody;)

or better still some ideas :biggrin: I've bought some jigsaws and cards ,anything else ?

wish I could. there is no-where to move it to unfortunately. I think my neighbours the other way are going to be effected too

The last time this happened was when my neighbour refused to trim his tree back and we had no tv for about a week until I went into his garden and hacked the offending branches off.

if I lost my broadband too I'd definitely slash my wrists

No terrestrial signal in your area ?

A small portable tv with coathanger attached would do the job if you've got terrestrial. Or maybe portable tv, set top box and an indoor aerial for Freeview ?

Have you got a video player still?

Visit your local charity shop, they might have lots of videos for 50 pence each. They get so many, they sell them cheaply. Or post on here a request for old videos, which people send to you, then later you give them to a charity shop. You might find old ones like Brief Encounter, etc.
Just a thought.

Or borrow DVDs from the library.

Or ask on here for some of the "Free" dvds that came with newspapers. Give people an idea of what your father likes.

I have over 100 DVD's and VHS but they are all movies.

My Father cannot watch movies . Anything over a few minutes is completly lost from his memory you see. thats what dementia is . Its the reason why he cannot read either.
He can do crosswords because he can see what has gone before and what remains to do moment by moment.

Best bet so far is music, simple card games and chat. During the daytime I can get him to help me pot a few plants indoors and maybe paint a couple of windows etc.

I'm sorry, I forgot about that aspect. What about Nature videos then, where there is no plot. Blue Planet etc? Walking with lions? Or Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers, plenty of music and dancing?

Use the broadband for bbc iplayer and let him watch TV on the PC screen. There's plenty on there - he can watch a whole series at once.

not a bad idea but the only useable tv monitor is miles from the PC and he is 88 with sciatica, dodgy legs crook knee and partially deaf  so he would need to be in the sitting room and pc in the kitchen argh nightmare

I've only got a 3gb per month download so not sure what 2x weeks worth would cost .?

def worth a looksee cheers
