Hello
I have joined as I would like to take up cycling at the grand age of 54. I live in N Ireland. What bike would people suggest for someone with limited experience. I really looking forward to getting stuck in!!!
Also wanted to brag a bit as my friends primary school have done a animation about the Giro Italia coming to N Ireland, I thought it was great as its given them an interest in bikes. Its on u tube if anyone would like to see it just let me know and I will give you the llink.

Hope to keep popping in and hopefully let you all know how im doing.

Thanks Guys

Julie

:welcome: I favour road bikes but you'll have to give folks on here a bit more idea of budget and what you plan to do are you after more comfort or speed etc. Congrats to the kids btw.

Hi Julie and :welcome:.

The bike will depend on what kind of budget you have and what kind of riding you intend to do (On road? Off road? Trundling, touring or racing? Flat handlebar? Drop handlebar?). The manufacturers have attempted to fill every conceivable niche , so the more you can narrow it down the better the advice you'll get.

For beginners a "hybrid" is the usual starting point: flat handlebar, upright riding position, 700c size wheels like a racing bike but fatter tyres that are comfier on bad roads and will cope with a bit of off road use, plus more gears than most people will know what to do with at the start.

:welcome: As others have said it all depends on budget and where you're going to ride. I started off on a MTB but now on a road bike which I love! Although I still have a mountain bike incase I fancy off roading! I'd say try some and and see what feels comfortable.

:welcome: Julia!
Try to test ride a few, maybe borrow a couple from friends, ask your local bike shop or bike recycling place.
Whatever you settle on now, you will buy another one (N+1) next year ... or sooner!

Welcome Julia.I'm a mountain bike man myself....
