Looking to replace my daughter's beloved iPad which got smashed when a shelf I put up fell on it. I really don't know anything about them, but I'd be hoping to spend not a lot more than the ton on fleabay, which seems to be the going rate for a 2nd generation. Or I might stretch to a 3rd - is there a significant difference? Some of the listings seem to lay a big stress on "Device DOES NOT have an iCloud account" - what's that all about? Is there anything else I should look for/avoid? Basically, as you can tell, I need all the help I can get!

Thanks in anticipation.

No iPad advice, but next time you put up a shelf use longer screws.

2nd generation is getting long in the tooth now and will start to struggle with iOS updates and become slow/glitchy. (My iPad 1 did the same which meant I upgraded from it)

My understanding of the no iCloud is that these are either stolen or have been sold on without the iPad being reset, limiting its use (others might be able to,clarify further)

There was this thread the other week there!:

Thanks for that, but that's all about humungously expensive new stuff that I can't afford. I'm thinking a hundred squids, give or take.

So do I want one that does *not* have an iCloud account? (Does that mean sort of like a phone that's unlocked?)

Well, it might depend on what the seller means when they say it has no iCloud account but here goes.

If they have reset the iPad back to "factory" state, it will have no User stuff including iCloud / iTunes account info on it. If you want to use it with your existing iCloud / iTunes account then you can enter your existing ID and password and then start downloading anything that you've purchased.

If you want to create a new iCloud account, you might be in trouble because each Apple device can only create up to 5 new iCloud accounts – ever. If that limit has been reached on the device there is nothing you can do.

Note that iTunes and iCloud account IDs are not necessarily the same thing. You'll need to read up on this because I will lose the will to live if I have to into the detail and the history of why it ended up this way

but… if you have all of the account info from your old iPad then you should be able to put the same info into the newer iPad

and…if you have been backing up the old one to a PC or iCloud then you should be able to set up the newer one using a simple restore which will be quicker than downloading all of your purchases and reorganising your icons etc. again.

If you don't have your existing account and password details then you might be stuffed unless you can pass the Apple security reset procedures.

Further to @Viking 's post I would ask the seller if the iPad is fully unlocked and not locked to a 'non-existent' account.
Apple are very strict on passwords/access/security so unless you are sure it's 100% released this would prevent you from putting your own iCloud ID on the device.

I'd also pay via PayPal so you have another layer of security in case anything is amiss.

I think you're probably best just getting the iPad repaired. Especially if you're buying the same model, it will likely cost the same as getting yours repaired. Take it into Apple, they can be quite competitive on price with repairs.

I got a new screen fixed on my kids hand-me-down iPad 2 for about £20 by a guy on eBay. I certainly would not consider buying another 2, they are horrifically slow.

I have based iPads (and iPhones) on to family members with absolutely no issues

You simply need to remove from the "Find my phone" setting and factory reset

I had an original iPhone 5 which had been on contract with 3

The battery swelled and the screen came apart, so took it into the Apple Store.

I knew that as it was out of warranty with no Apple Care it could be expensive.

£48 for the replacement battery, and as the battery had damaged the phone, a further £0 for replacing the phone.

The damage was caused by the battery, so I got a brand new phone for £48
