Apple has announced that it took courage to make the decision and suggest using the charger socket for wired phones.

Just like any number of Sony and Samsung candybar phones I have owned over the last 10+ years.

Clearly displaying a level of heroism that Apple can only dream of.

What? They're going to force people to buy expensive iphone 7 specific headphones? I'm not surprised. Of course, within a few months you'll be able to get compatible ones for cheaper, but this sort of thing irritates me. I wonder what the advantages are over a normal headphone socket, other than money making?

Compatible ones will be cheaper, but I assume the socket is proprietary so apple will get a royalty on each one.

Can you use headphones while charging?

The alleged advantage is that more information can passed through. It's possible that means a whole new class of accessories.

I've never bought an iPhone because of apple's walled garden philosophy. The walls have just got a little higher

Smaller phone. It was limited by the casing for the 3.5mm socket.

With one fell swoop Apple has dismissed 50-odd years of the 3.5mm audio socket. A big fat middle finger to stability, standards and proven technology.

Downtube shifters worked quite well didn't they?

I think people are overlooking the biggest problem with the new device, it's an iphone. It's designed to be frustrating from the start, these frustrations can be eased if you buy into the whole apple ecosystem.

My Nokia 3310 is much smaller and it has a 3.5mm socket. It also has a calculator and alarm clock app. If they can squeeze a Pentium processor in there, they can squeeze a phone socket in there. I smell illuminati...
It's the thickness of the phone which the socket limits. It can now be thinner than the casing. It's a phone that's not been released so not sure how you know his thin it is.

The iPhone 7 will include a Lightning to 3.5 mm headphone jack adapter in the box. Panic over. ^_^
